@penfount Speaking of the brochure here are the pages from November 20th, 1932: #FountainPe #FountainPens
Parker Vacumatic brochure for retailers, page 1: "A revolutionary new Parker pen Vacuum filled. Holds 102% more ink. Reversible point Writes 2 Ways. TO THE RETAIL SALESPERSON - to be successful in selling Parker Vacuum Filler Pens, please carefully study the pen's features shown within. Hang this folder near your pen counter and use it to show customer the advantages of this revolutionary pen, and how to operate it. PArker Vacuum Filler".Page 2: "How to demonstrate and sell the Parker Vacuum Filler Pen. In selling the Parker Vacuum Filler Pen it is highly important to impress upon the prospect that this pen is a revolutionary departure from all existing pens. It is utterly distinctive in style, priciple, and performance. We suggest you put over this idea somewhat as follows in step number one. Then continue through the remainder of the sales talk in the order given. This is merely an outline, but it is worth following so that you will include all the major features of the Vacuum Filler Pen in your sales talk. STEP 1 - Start somewhat like this, meanwhile reaching into the case for one Vacuum Filler Pen: "Let me show you a marvelous new invention that has completely revolutionized fountain pens." Display the pen carefully in your hand as you would hold a precious gem, asppreciating its worth. Then remove the cap, and hold the pen so that the golden arrow on clip and nib are toward the customer, and say: "This is the new Parker Vacuum Filler Pen. It is filled by vacuum, and holds 102% more ink than other pens of its size. There is no rubber sac, no piston or valves." STEP 2 - Continue as follows: "And notice this, the point is of platinum and gold (show point). It is reversible - writes two ways -" Then, on a pad of paper write the following, meanwhile reading the words out loud: "The upper surface writes extra fine. The under surface writes fine, medium or broad, as you select." Then hand the pen to customer and say: "Try it." STEP 3 - While customer is trying the pen, get one of each of the three styles of Vacuum Filler Pens freom the case. Place them on the counter and interrupt the customer s follows: "There are three distinctive styles of Vacuum Filler Pens. This, (showing Jet and Silver pearl) is of laminated Jet and Silver Pearl. Beautiful isn't it? Why, its barrel has a lustre like shimmering velvet. Yet, it's non-breakable. This, (show Jet and Burgundy Pearl) is Jet and Burgundy Pearl. They're both beauties. The deep Jet is the conservative style that some prefer." STEP 4 - Quote the price, $7.50, and show the Pencil to match at $3.50." Footer of the page says: "THE PARKER PEN COMPANY, JANESVILLE, WISC. PRINTED IN U.S.A. 20-11-32Page 3: "Vacuum Filler Parts. Vacuum Filler cap of laminated unbreakable Permanite mounted with 14-karat gold fittings. Inner cap provides airtight chamber for nib when cap is properly replaced on barrel after using. Vacuum filler feed and vaccum tube. The feed is made of hard rubber recessed to take the form of nib. It is single capillary channel construction, insuring steady even flow. The vacuum tube is hard rubber and fitted into the rear of the feed. Vacuum Filler filling mechanism is of high brass and chromium plated. The pressure button is gold plated and knurled for easy and sure turning to lock and unlock. The spring is stainless steel. The threaded disk bushing for holding the mechanism in the barrel is aluminum. Vacuum Filler nib is 14-karat gold, platinum plated with Duo-point which writes two ways - extra fine on upper side and fine, medium or broad on under side. Generously tipped with highest quality iridium and ground to perfection by experts who are penalized if any nib is rejected by Parker inspectors. Clip of 14-karat gold. Optical spring steel, seated by threaded plug in end of cap, permitting pen to set low in pocket. Clip tip smoothed so as not to tear cloth but do give firm grip for carrying. Barrel of laminated unbreakable Permanite. Barrel and section are one piece. No chance for leaking. Blind cap of laminated unbreakable Permanite to match barrel and cap." Also shown drawings of every part described on this page.Page 4, on the left side: "Reversible Point of Platinum and Gold Writes Two Ways (shows drawings of sample writing with all point sizes - EF to B). X-ray photo shows large ink chamver and vacuum filler. Three Styles. Jet and Silver Pearl, Jet and Burgundy Pearl, Deep Jet, Gold Mounted. Barrel of striped laminations as shimmering as velvet, yet non-breakable. Vacuum Filler Pens . . $7.50, Pencils to match . . . $3.50." On the right side: "How To Fill The Parker Vacuum Filler Pen. Contains no rubber sac, no piston, no valves, no packing - holds 102% more ink without increase in size." (Drawing showing how much more ink Vacumatics hold in comparison to pens with rubber sac). "1 - Unscrew the small cap at the butt of barrel, thus exposing the filler button (Figure 1). 2 - Release the filler plunger by pressing the button in and turning slightly to left. Plunger is now extended as in Figure 2. 2 - Immerse the pen point completely in ink, depress the filler plunger down and up 7 or 8 times fairly rapidlybut pause a second at the top of each stroke. See Figure 3. 4 - Before removing pen from bottle, depress the filler plunger and re-engage it by presing in and turning button slightly to right. Replace small cap. (When filling the pen one can "feel" when it is full as it is harder to work the plunger when the pen is full.) NOTE - When the Parker Vacuum Filler Pen is about 9/10 empty, ink will feed to the nib more rapidly than normal; this is the signal to refill. Always, when the pen is not in use, keep the large cap tightly screwed over the pen point. This will absolutely keep the pen from leaking. Remember, the Parker Vacuum Filler is the last word in fine pens and to get the best out of it, use Quink, the quick-starting, quick-drying, non-clogging ink.

Half of the AI patches don't work with Keith Hoodlet and @joshbressers This paper proves exactly what I have been saying in numerous talks: fixing vulnerabilities properly still requires a clever human involved. opensourcesecurity.io/2026/2026-10-…

Half of the AI patches don't work with Keith Hoodlet
Josh talks to Keith Hoodlet about a research project he co-authored about the success rate of AI generated vulnerability patches. Keith has a very scientific approach to this paper and does a great job of breaking down all the data and outcomes. There isn’t a lot of AI research that takes this approach, this paper is a breath of fresh air. Keith has some pretty scary details during the discussion, but he manages to give us hope at the end.

@penfount Took it apart as much as I could. Nib and feed don't want to budge. Feed and a breather tube both made out of ebonite (breather tubes were usually made out of celluloid) and seem to be one piece. It might've been a pen that retailers showed to a customer as an example.

New #Plushtodon colours now available for pre-orders on our shop! This is a way to support our work and get a squishy friend at the same time. blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/10/plush… #Merchtodon

Plushtodon pre-orders now open
While our team is working hard on finishing up the 5.0 update for Mastodon, I have something else to share with you. This year, instead of launching sales towards the end of November, leaving very little time for shipping before everything closes down for the holidays, we’re opening pre-orders for our latest #Plushtodon models **right now**. Take a look at them! Pre-order nowShipping expected November 2026 By now, you know the drill: They’re made of soft velboa, are ICTI Ethical Toy Program and Intertek WCA certified, and are suitable for children 3 and older. **Here’s the important info** : We expect to be able to start shipping them beginning of November. If you order something else in the same order with them (and you should, to make the most of the shipping cost, and because we make really cool, high quality merch), everything will be shipped together only once the plushies are ready. If that’s not how you want it, order separately. What else is there that you could attach to your order, I hear you ask? Well, as it happens, this year marks the **10th anniversary of Mastodon itself**. That’s right, we’ve been around for 10 years. October 16, 2026 is when I first publicly shared a link to Mastodon on a link aggregator site, bringing in the first wave of users and officially “launching” the project. To celebrate the anniversary, our artist Dopatwo and I prepared a design, screen printed on hoodies and t-shirts (this time, not just unisex t-shirts, but ones made for women as well, as you requested). If you’re not familiar with fabric printing techniques, screen printing is a really cool one, giving a very vibrant and durable result. And of course we only put them on high quality cotton. We also still have lots of “I write alt text” t-shirts, which have one of my favourite Dopatwo artworks on them. As for the small stuff, we’ve got 3 different enamel pin designs available and some cute sticker sheets. Here you can check out people showing off their Mastodon plushies on Mastodon! Anyway, thanks for sticking with us!

Someone asked if it actually writes well or is just a show piece. Yes, it’s a proper pen for real use, though this nib is very thin by my standards. But then again, that means I can write very small Chinese with it… #fountainpen #fountainpens
Handwriting sample of the Platinum 3776: well, I’ve refilled it with Robert Oster Fire and Ice as a treat, though I forgot that most papers won’t sheen it like Tomoe River does. Also this nib is so thin. But that majes it a good pick for writing Chinese.

[A few sentences in Chinese, one character per 5mm box. It’s just copied from a book, but it happens to mention fountain pens replacing brushes in everyday Chinese life]

Why is someone posting fake notices from defcon.social saying: "our systems found irregular activity on your account" I thought defcon.social was a legit server? I'm going to block the spammer (name: MASThelpODON ... wow) but do any of yall know who runs the instance? #spam
I don't want to post the text from the spam post since someone might run a search that bans all accounts posting this text. And I don't want to get banned. It's one of those scams where they say you account has been compromised and please click this link.

Never click the link. The link has the domain mastodon.hnwind.com then a bunch of numbers.

Seabirds like common murres may develop pressure sores on their feet if they spend too much time on land (like for medical treatment). So they wear baby socks #Birds

This Platinum 3776 was rattling around the bottom of my collection. I don’t remember where I got it or why I bought it, but I feel like I probably paid forty bucks for it? It wasn’t a gift, I’d remember that. I just realized, inspecting it, that those […] [Original post on infosec.exchange]

👻 After three visits, I still get goosebumps as I push open the heavy doors and step inside once more. This spectacular control room was built in the 1920s in Art Deco style. Natural light enters through an immense central skylight. Levers, switches, and dials […] [Original post on mstdn.social]
An abandoned Art Deco power plant control room features a grand domed skylight illuminating vintage control panels. A central structure and metal railings are also visible.

I hit a paragraph in the book I was listening to today about the main character who keeps his notes in a Leuchturm 1917 A4 journal, written with a Pelikan M800 Souverän fountain pen. And I just laughed and said "One of us!!!!" #FountainPens

@penfount Last time it was pointed out to me that I need to show a pen in disassembled mode. So here it is. Here is a few things. While the date stamp on the barrel shows 4th quarter of 1937 (47), the nib shows date code of 2nd quarter of 1942 (.2.). This […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

@penfount New - old pen for restoration! This one is a Parker Vacumatic Long Major from the 4th quarter of 1937 (2nd gen) in a rare burgundy pearl!. The only issue with this pen (besides dried up diaphragm) is that the tines on the nib are misaligned. Also […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

The Economist asks, Is it still worthwhile to teach cursive in school? Me? I’m a cursive via fountain pen kind of guy. Writing is more than putting words on a page. It becomes ritualistic. Creative. The “auratic” meaning so much more than the illusory transparency of two-dimensional typescript […]

@catbuttes I was just like you when i started. No I have over 50 pens and some of them are over 200$ (well, all my vintage pens are). As far as inks, yes a 50ml bottle will last a while, butit also depends on how much you are writing.

Got a question for the #fountainpen folks out here. This is a relatively affordable rabbit hole I’m falling down right? I know some of the pens can get slightly pricy, but some of the inks look amazing and I can’t imagine you get through a bottle that quickly? (I’m telling myself that I’m more […]

🖋️💖 #fountainpen #fountainpens
Handwritten cursive note in teal blue ink, reading:

A woman posts with pride and self-satisfaction about her latest accomplishment in her favorite creative hobby, which has been a recurring source of joy and peace ever since she discovered it while gravely ill eleven years ago.

A man she’s never seen before in her life walks into her mentions and informs her that hobbies are inefficient.

This isn’t a joke setup; I blocked him. And now I’m inefficiently doing my hobby about it.

Doesn’t KWZ Iron Gall Turquoise pair perfectly with this pen? [a metallic teal fountain pen rests across the notebook]
