Having already blossomed once about a month ago, my osmanthus has inexplicably chosen to delight us once again with its heady scent and clusters of golden flowers. I’m trying not to conclude that it’s its death knell.

Silk kimono panel. A bold vintage silk shibori (tie-dye) in black with red ume blossoms an white stems. 1950-1980, Japan. Yorke Antique Textiles
Set against a midnight-black silk ground (kuro-ji), a dynamic tree branch composed of minute, resist-dyed ringlets climbs diagonally across the long vertical panel. Crafted using hand-tied kanoko shibori (fawn-spot tie-dyeing), the stark white stems form an angular, zig-zagging lattice that cradles vibrant crimson plum blossoms (kōbai / ume). The brilliant red petals pop dramatically against the dark void, creating a bold balance between geometric structure and organic floral forms. The scene evokes an intimate sensory atmosphere: the supple, three-dimensional texture (shibori-yori) of hand-bound silk under touch, the rustle of vintage woven threads, and the crisp visual sensation of winter wood bursting into the fiery warmth of early spring blooms.
Dating to Japan's mid-to-late Showa era (c. 1950–1980), this vintage kimono bolt section (tanmono) exemplifies the enduring mastery of traditional Japanese resist-dyeing. The plum blossom (ume) holds a cherished position in Japanese material culture and decorative art as a herald of spring, celebrated for flowering amid late-winter frosts to symbolize fortitude, renewal, and noble integrity. To execute such a complex multi-colored pattern, textile artisans deployed specialized shibori methods—painstakingly pinching, binding, and wrapping thousands of tiny silk knots with thread and capping motif areas with protective resist covers before immersing the fabric into crimson and deep black dye vats. This labor-intensive process embodies monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for material heritage), where humble human handcraft transforms raw silk into a tactile masterpiece of textile art.

To make money in value investing, you have to buy value. I see so many people complaining after they bought something optically cheap, not taking into account things like: 1. The biggest open-ended off-balance sheet liability there is: bad management. Sufficiently bad management can sink any idea.

8/10 This is something labor unions everywhere should be more worried and more vociferous about. Wage growth is sluggish not because businesses are evil but because our system punishes manufacturers in countries that allow wage growth to keep pace with productivity growth.

In truth I am not exactly sure what that even means. But this I know: none of the foreign-born residents in Japan who champion such increasingly strict guidelines could conceive of him or herself missing the cutoff. They are always part of the in-group. Until they are not.
According to a recent Asahi Shimbun Article on Permanent Residency Requirements, Japan's Immigration Services Agency is tightening permanent residency guidelines to require an expected pension payout equivalent to 30 years of Employees' Pension (Kosei Nenkin) participation at an income level exceeding the average Japanese household.

3/6 It's more "normal" for countries with excessively low consumption shares to adjust much more quickly and brutally, but while "slow" Japanese-style adjustments are often economically much more costly over the longer term, socially and politically they are much less costly.
