VOCs are tricky to detect, so they’ve been underestimated in carbon models, a new review argues. 🧪 Research by @ayanezserrano.bsky.social, @rogerseco.cat, @jpreixach.bsky.social eos.org/research-spo...

Volatile Organic Compounds Have Been Underestimated in the Carbon Cycle - Eos
Better tracking of these reactive compounds is essential for understanding how the atmosphere and terrestrial biosphere interact.

Rain Carries a Hidden Chemistry From Air to Ecosystems
A storm begins above the forest as weather, but inside each falling drop is a small chemical spacecraft, carrying evidence from trees, microbes, fires, cities, aerosols, clouds, and sunlight.

Very happy to share our new paper: Toluene early morning peaks as potential biogenic stress signals of Mediterranean forests. We spotted early morning toluene peaks during heat waves which we have attributed to a biogenic response from oak trees! pubs.rsc.org/en/content/a...

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...
This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

Tropospheric nitrogen dioxide concentrations measured over Europe on 8 Oct. High concentrations can be seen in Italy’s Po Valley, along the north coast of Africa, and in other hotspots. NO2 is released during the combustion of fossil fuels and is known to exacerbate various health conditions. 😷

The words will resonate for many scientists working in the global south/ less privileged insts...tokenism runs high...but to expect science which is also a human driven enterprise to be any different from other sectors is utopian perhaps..hope Science remains better off than other domains...

Equity in science is a beautiful lie — and I’m done pretending
Science isn’t really moving towards equity; institutions are just perfecting the appearance of equity. We need to build an alternative system.
