It starts to become hard to see what happens on top of the #GCP, as my vantage point does not grow with it, and the next level recedes somewhat to leave space for the terrace. But you can glimpse progress. Next month this is probably better to see, when they go on to the next level.
A very large construction site with multiple cranes. You see the outer shell with four levels of a really large building in the works. The lowest level is much higher than the others ones. Some stairs can be seen to be under construction, which lead up to the third level. A lot of construction stuff in front and around. It is slightly overcast.

Welcome everyone to the winter semester @uni-graz.at - looking very much forward to meeting you! Together with someone from philosophy, I will teach this semester a course on aesthetics and science, open to all students. I am very curious what I will learn. And also advanced math and BSM physics 🙂

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to visit the current construction site of the #GCP, which reached the terrace level. With great views, this will be open to the public, and will have quite a bit of greens on it. A place to meet and discuss, and an opportunity for thinking.
A construction site with multiple levels, some cranes and a very daunting construction stairway to the terrace level.A view into the construction site. The foundations for the benches for one lecture hall are visible, as is part of the atrium and several more levels.A panoramic view from the terrace. Behind a construction site part of the city of Graz (west direction from the GCP), the Schloßberg and eventually some mountains as first level of the alps are visible.

This time the progress is less visible. On some sides you can already see the lecture halls taking shape, including the rows for the listeners. Also, on top of the building things happen. I will have a chance to visit the top in about two weeks, hopefully having some interesting photos then #GCP
A large construction site with a large building under construction. Three levels are already visible, the lowest more than twice as high as the upper ones, and a big ramp leading up on the left-hand side. Several cranes, and a lot of material around. It is sunny.

Important thread on why we, as researchers, cannot be neutral regarding politics. Any attack on some part of science (or scientists) with the intent to replace it with something unscientific, will eventually be an attack on all fields. There are enough examples in history, even for basic physics.

Science, even very fundamental one, is never apolitical and detached from society. And in an ever more extreme world fuelled by greed, hate, and avoidance, also we will be affected ever more drastically. Thus, being an activist to stop escalation is a necessity today to be able to pursue science.

This long thread is worthwhile to read. You will then see the described effects everywhere, if you not already did. It is also annoying that as scientists we know exactly in our subject about the issues, but we far too often fail to recognize it in the way we do science (or interact with society).

European summers aren't what they used to be! Grey curve is the climate of 1950-90. Every coloured line is a summer since 1991. Every one since 2005 sits beyond the 95th percentile of the curve. This isn't a shifting #climate. It's already a new one! 🤯🥵 Plot inspired by Barriopedro et al. 2011
Distribution of European summer temperature anomalies, June to August, over 25°W-40°E, 35-70°N, land only, the region used by Barriopedro et al., relative to 1961-1990, from ERA5. Grey bars show the 41 summers from 1950 to 1990, with a normal curve fitted through them, centred near zero. Coloured vertical lines show every summer from 1991 to 2025, shaded yellow through dark red by year, and almost all of them fall to the right of the grey distribution. The ten warmest are labelled, with 2024 furthest right at 2.74°C and 2022 next at 2.54°C. A dotted line marks the 95th percentile of the 1950-1990 distribution at 0.76°C.

Both run long, which is fine, since alt text has no practical limit and screen reader users benefit from the detail.

Not just lobbying! our new paper maps 27 mechanisms of regulatory capture used by Big AI + 11 narrative framings that rationalise capture. “Big AI’s Regulatory Capture: Mapping Industry Interference and Government Complicity” will be presented at #FAccT2026 next month arxiv.org/abs/2605.068... 1/
Title: Big AI’s Regulatory Capture: Mapping Industry Interference and Government Complicity

abstract: Over the past decade, the AI industry has come to exert an unprecedented economic, political and societal power and influence. The well-functioning of regulatory and oversight structures and processes that govern the industry thus have paramount ramifications for everything from fostering public trust in systems marketed as AI, the credibility of scientific knowledge, educational and healthcare services and products, information ecosystems, the environment, rule of law and integrity of democratic process. In this paper, we first develop a taxonomy of mechanisms enabling capture to provide a comprehensive understanding of the problem. Grounded in design science research (DSR) methodologies and extensive scoping review of existing literature and media reports, our taxonomy of capture consists of 27 mechanisms across five categories. We then develop an annotation template incorporating our taxonomy, and manually annotate and analyse 100 news articles. The purpose behind this analysis is twofold: validate our taxonomy and provide a novel quantification of capture mechanisms and dominant narratives. Our analysis identifies 249 instances of capture mechanisms, often co-occurring with narratives that rationalise such capture. We find that the most recurring categories of mechanisms are Discourse & Epistemic Influence, concerning narrative framing, and Elusion of law, related to violations and contentious interpretations of antitrust, privacy, copyright and labour laws. We further find that Regulation stifles innovation, Red tape and National Interest are the most frequently invoked narratives used to rationalise capture. We emphasize the extent and breadth of regulatory capture by coalescing forces — Big AI and governments — as something policy makers and the public ought to treat as an emergency.
