There is more than 190GW of compute capacity in planning, yet it appears that Anthropic and OpenAI, who represent 80%+ of all demand, only really have need for a combined 8GW to 16GW - who are the customers for the rest? www.wheresyoured.at/premium-ai-is-getting-way-too-expensive/

To take this a step further…why does anyone need AI compute in the levels that it’s currently being built and deployed? To run or train open source models? Because those are the only two options, and I’m not sure why anyone other than an AI lab or AI startup would need to do that, nor what they would get out of doing that (versus paying a hyperscaler or using an AI lab’s API) other than the chance to say “we have AI compute capacity.”

Then there’s the question of how much compute these companies actually have. OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar has said that OpenAI ended 2025 with around 1.9GW of compute capacity, and if we assume Anthropic had comparable amounts, that puts the “demand” for AI compute for both at somewhere in the region of 4GW of capacity, and I can’t imagine it’s increased by much more than another 2GW in the last six months, even with Anthropic’s rental of 300MW of SpaceX’s Colossus-1 data center and however many other megawatts might come out of Colossus-2.

While both (in theory) have “insatiable demand” for compute — and to be clear, this is not what’s happened, this much compute demand did not come online in 2026 — even if we doubled their capacity in 2026, that’s still a mere 8GW of demand from companies that make up, as I’ve estimated before, 70%+ of the world’s compute demand, if not more.

And buddy, we’re building way more capacity than that.

Per Sightline Climate back in February, there’s around 190GW of AI compute capacity in planning, though only 5GW appeared to be in construction at the time. If we assume a 1.3 PUE (a measurement of how efficiently a data center uses power, with a lower number meaning higher efficiency of power headed to actual computing components), that gives us around 146GW of usable — and thus billable — IT load. If we assume a 1.4 PUE, that number drops to 135GW.

'Island Lake, California' - an aerial embroidery commission from last September I haven't shared yet! The right hand side was a nightmare at times, very busy with textures and elements and odd shapes. I hope it came out effective though? I don't have much experience in rocky landscapes :)
