At first, nothing seemed to happen, but after a while, an odd scraping noise – as though stone were moving against stone – began to intertwine itself with the sound of water dripping down. The wooden cots the cells were furnished with began to creak and groan and the iron bars started to sing. … And yet … none of those things made him falter even for a moment, as he recognised what was happening for what it no doubt was: a warning. Nature telling him that he was about to overstep a line his younger soul should not dare cross. … It needn’t have reminded him. He could feel it too … could sense whatever power he was calling on to carry out his will g n a w i n g at his soul – at the very fabric of his being – until he was left feeling not unlike someone standing at the edge of a precipice, with a harsh wind whipping all around them, a single step, a forceful push, one wrong move from falling off the edge. Though … that feeling … was actually quite thrilling. Not that he would have relented had it felt any different. Nature could wail and lament and warn him that he was making a mistake, tell him that he ought to stop before this went too far all it wanted – it could shriek and rage, if it so pleased – nothing would deter him. After all, he feared no consequences. And nature’s fury could not compare to his own wrath.
