The Call For Control, signed by 22 countries and growing, is a welcome step towards stronger AI regulation. Responsible leadership on AI is long overdue, and needed now with ever-increasing urgency. Read The Elders' AI Principles for Leaders here: theelders.org/news/elders-...
“I'm encouraged that government leaders are finally recognising the stakes of failing to govern frontier AI. The Call for Control by 22 countries and counting provides a roadmap to a safer world for all.

But the road ahead is not going to be an easy one. Leaders must find the courage to prioritise cooperation, trust, solidarity, accountability, and integrity, as urgently called for in The Elders’ AI Principles for Leaders.” - Helen Clark, Member of The Elders

In a larger multi-member constituency you are more likely to have a representative who matches your political preference/support. Additional member gives far to much power to parties and squeezes independents and regional parties

Avery Bowser @averybowser.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The beauty is that parties pay attention to where the transfers come from and have to shape their overall appeal/offer accordingly. And independents have a real chance.

Not at all. Ireland north and south use it successfully. We have high voter turnout and never encountered big queues. Works really well in our multi-member constituencies

Move to single transferable vote within existing single member constituencies to ensure as an immediate measure that all MPs are returned by at least 50% of those who have voted. Further reform could follow (multi member STV constituencies with no lists)

And once again health drama will overshadow the stalled & blocked changes recommended by Prof Ray Jones for children's services. Nesbitt clearly prioritised health and engaged in constructive ambiguity on children's services reform - speaking in favour but unwilling to follow the key recommendation

Not helpful at this stage of the mandate when things have already ground to a halt. The really sad, smoke and mirrors part of this is that we have been getting Bengoa since COVID but at a snail's pace. The changes will come but they'll be reactive and too late for many who will have suffered.

I agree with Koulla. There is strong evidence from the Youth Justice Review (shortly after DOJ set up) that MACR should be raised. This has been blocked by the inappropriate use of the Petition of Concern, with appearance of improper pressure applied to UUP MLAs. Clear evidence of need for reforms.

Very interesting observing different PR systems. Seem to be very Party focused rather than candidate. STV seems to deliver clear constituency link and space for independents, although the South seems to have managed to carve out 'false flag' independents from the system.

The horror at what is being done to Palestinians comes from the same place as the horror at what is being done, yet again, to Jews. Does the government really want us to stop standing in solidarity with the victims of atrocities? If so, it will make the country less safe for everyone.
