That convergence happened a lot faster with LLM-written code. That's not to say I don't still pour a ton of design guidance and critique into my work with them, but it's obvious my days are numbered on even on that front.

I think perhaps a lot of us expected it to move more like compilers did: for years and years, if you wanted the most optimized possible code, you still had to hand-write it in assembly. Eventually there was a tipping point where the compilers got better than you could ever hope to be at optimization

That criticism holds a ton more weight with me. All I saw on my feed was a bunch of people reposting that the developer said they use it for coding and being like "I wash my hands of this, because I am AI-free!"

The problem with Outlier is that they also use LLMs for design, art and writing. The graphic design of the game, a lot of the copywriting in it and many features do not originate with humans. They don't give a fuck about their users, setting up the project as the next game to be sold to the NYT.

I'm more surprised seeing that denial from within the field. But I think that as used as we are to acceleration, still very few of us were prepared for a tech that went from "obviously, laughably inferior" to "good enough for most work" in about 6 months.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that there are a lot of people outside the field who are still unaware of how quickly and completely the sea has changed. Or how categorically different in efficacy the application of LLMs to code is from their applicability to other media.

And as someone making a living here, this isn't "where the wind is blowing". It's done. Over. The switch is behind us. And the next amazing solo game developer, for better or worse, is using LLMs to write the code so they can focus more on design, art, and writing.

And yes this is different from creative works because as much as us software craftspeople like to moan about our self-expression, there was always something fundamentally different about code. It's the reason a musical cover is a *cover*, but a code rewrite from Ruby to Java is a replacement.

I'm not saying this for GenAI use in general. It DOES matter how you and I feel about AI use in art and writing. But for software LLMs went over the tipping point somewhere around Opus 4.5: like optimizing compilers, they can now write the nitty-gritty better than the median coder.

When it comes to how software is made, that ship has sailed. It sailed fast and it sailed comprehensively, like when compilers were invented. This is not something to be litigated or rolled back and it doesn't really matter how you or I feel about it, it's done.
