There should be responsibility. There should be just peace. His mother was wounded in the same attack, and the family’s home was damaged. Those who would like to support the family can do so via PayPal: natali.umansky@gmail.com Photo @libkos and from the family archive.

In September 2026 alone, there were 235 air alerts in Kyiv. Schools, hospitals, universities, infrastructure, and residential buildings were under deliberate Russian attacks. Hundreds of civilians were injured. Around thirty were killed. Danya was one of them.

He never finished that thought. A Russian drone reached his room first. You can see the drops of blood on his school notebook. Today, Daniel was laid to rest in Israel, where his grandparents live.

There is a terrible symbolism in what Daniel was writing at the moment his life was taken. A 14-year-old boy was trying to put into modern words a centuries-old principle: the strong must not be allowed to destroy the weak.

Daniel never finished his home assignment. At around 8 a.m., a Russian het drone struck his apartment building in the center of Kyiv. Daniel was killed in his room. Among the wreckage of the family’s apartment, his school notebook remained open.

He wrote about respecting others, protecting the vulnerable, helping orphans, and other basic human principles.

He was writing about Volodymyr Monomakh, a ruler of Kyivan Rus, and his moral teachings written almost nine centuries ago. The assignment asked Daniel to think about how those principles might be understood today.

This is the unfinished homework of 14-year-old Daniel Umansky. On the morning of September 25, Daniel was sitting in his room in Kyiv, doing his homework.

Cutting arms to Ukraine brings torture, sexual violence, disappearances, filtration camps, more deaths. We couldn’t be more supportive of Nobel Peace laureate, true human rights defender, @avalaina.bsky.social in her answer to @franceskalbs.bsky.social. #StandWithUkraine 🇺🇦

How do they plan to repay this "gift" from Putin's oligarch?

Because besides the exhaustion, there is also a great deal of love. And even though this love is often quite harsh, it’s precisely this harsh love that pulls us all through.

And you know, I’m very glad to be coming home. Yes, I can’t stop the Russian missiles and drones that are destroying homes, hospitals, and schools. But it’s a very human desire to be around people you love, even in danger, just to share it with them.

Holding on takes a significant concentration of strength, and this is already the 6th year of the invasion - everyone is noticeably exhausted, so we’ll just have to adapt to the air raid siren wailing nonstop.

Russia terrorizes the city day and night, deliberately striking civilian targets. I read a post from a friend of mine: “Tell me this will end and everything will be fine. Even if you have to lie.”

Last night, at the hotel in the room next door, someone moved furniture, and my whole body flinched. I know a lot of self-regulation techniques, but it’s hard to explain to your body that you’re safe. I couldn’t fall asleep for a long time after that.

I was on an advocacy trip abroad, where I could sleep at night without explosions above my head and didn’t have to carry a tourniquet in my bag in case of massive bleeding. But we still carry everything with us regardless.

Constant stress makes itself felt, leading to health issues. As a result, I was forced to shift my participation in several important autumn events online, despite my desire to attend in person. I am currently heading out on my next trip, because war takes no breaks - even when you are exhausted.

People in Ukraine do not have the luxury of putting it out of their minds; this reality has become our daily life. The only thing separating people in European countries from this reality is that Ukrainians continue to hold back massive Russian violence, preventing it from advancing further.

I know that many people abroad have grown accustomed to Russia’s constant strikes against the people of Ukraine. Yet the ability to “not think about it” is a privilege that reflects your position within the structure of reality.

I walk through the streets while drones are being shot down directly overhead. When I look up at the sky, I see only a threat. Yet it is impossible to put your daily affairs, and your very life, on hold. Paralysis is a forerunner of death. And we have chosen to live.

The Russians are using tactics of continuous bombardment to paralyse life in Kyiv. The metro stops, traffic across the bridges is blocked, and administrative buildings and shopping complexes close.

Explosions occur constantly across Kyiv and its suburbs, killing children and entire families. Modern warfare has no front. Even your city, far from the line of contact, gradually becomes a front-line one.

Consequently, it has long ceased to fulfil its primary function of alerting the public to imminent danger. Rather, the sound itself has become an annoying form of psychological torment.

Air raid alerts have been sounding continuously, day and night, in Kyiv over recent days. They sound dozens of times a day.

We have the best people in the world working in air defense. But we don't have the missiles to protect ourselves. Trump changed his mind about giving us a license so that Ukraine could make these missiles itself. And my favorite city Kyiv is covered in craters like these.

Only in the morning were the wounded loaded into trucks like cattle and taken away. “In Olenivka, they burned what was left of my faith in people,” recalls one of the freed medics.

Eyewitnesses say that people were burned alive. Those who tried to get out onto the road were shot. No one provided medical assistance. The Russians just watched as people died. Captured medics tried to save those they could, wrapping people in pieces of cloth.

To be honest, it’s a very harrowing diary, but it needs to be read. It’s vital to produce professional translations into various languages. Because this is about the right to the truth. Kateryna’s voice must be heard by the world, just as she wanted.

Oleksandra Matviichuk @avalaina.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
As Kateryna’s words were read aloud, they held each other’s hands. I thought that this is exactly how we’ve been holding on to one another all these years.

Oleksandra Matviichuk @avalaina.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Kateryna’s daughter and her sister were at the presentation; Kateryna often addresses her sister in the pages of the diary once text messages had stopped getting through.

The Russians shell the hospital and it goes up in flames. Kateryna’s mother finds her daughter by chance. She is lying under a chequered bag. And she dies in her mother’s arms two days later in the cellar.

We have no emotional distance from the events, so reading these texts is painful. Take, for example, this note to her mother.

It is a true miracle that Kateryna’s mother managed to smuggle two filled-up notebooks out of the occupied city. Her daughter had asked her to find this diary and tell the whole world what was happening in Mariupol.

‘Kateryna Savenko’s Diary’ has been published. She lived in Mariupol with her beloved husband and daughter. On the first day of Russia’s full-scale invasion, she began to record the events she was experiencing. There are just 34 entries in total, after which the diary tragically ends.

The Russians were responsible for this horror in Syria. The Syrians had absolutely no way of protecting themselves from Russian missiles and bombs. If the Russians could, they would do exactly the same to us.

I also found myself thinking about my trip to Syria. As I stood amongst the ruins of what used to be a city, there wasn’t a single intact residential building as far as the eye could see.

I arrived in Kyiv late at night and a rocket attack began almost immediately. It was incredibly loud; the house was shaking and the doors were banging. After such a long journey, I had hardly any strength left. I’m so tired of these sleepless nights.

A huge crowd turned up. The audience was predominantly German, but there were also Ukrainians amongst them. Wherever I speak – be it in Brazil or South Africa – local Ukrainians always come along to support me and give me a hug.
