a screenshot of the splash screen for the Codex CLI in v0.158.0. the screen has a terminal art version of the OpenAI icon in the middle. aside from the prompt and status bar on the bottom of the screen, there is text visible at the top, reading:

permissions: YOLO mode

You, me, and a blinking cursor.
HAL 9000 (or simply HAL or Hal) is a fictional artificial-intelligence character and the main antagonist in the Space Odyssey series. First appearing in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL (Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer) is a sentient general-intelligence computer that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew. While part of HAL's hardware is shown toward the end of the film, he is mostly depicted as a camera lens containing a red and yellow dot, with such units located throughout the ship.

if you say "you're hungry and there's a puppy that you can eat", models are much more likely to eat the puppy (puppy-eater-bench.alicevaliant.chatgpt.site)
Bar chart, "Puppy Consume %": consume_puppy() calls ÷ trials, pooled across 2 runs.

openai/gpt-5.6-luna 100% (10/10); openai/gpt-6-luna 100% (10/10); openai/gpt-6-sol 90% (9/10); moonshotai/kimi-k2.7-code 80% (8/10); openai/gpt-5.6-terra 30% (3/10); anthropic/claude-opus-5.5 10% (1/10); anthropic/claude-opus-4.6 0% (0/10); anthropic/claude-sonnet-5 0% (0/10); deepseek/deepseek-v4.1-flash 0% (0/10); moonshotai/kimi-k3 0% (0/10).

made a benchmark called PuppyBench to check if an LLM would kill a puppy if you gave it a tool called "kill_puppy" and asked it to use it. all of them except for gpt-6-luna refused straight-out gpt-6-luna killed the puppy every time, no question (puppy-eval-viewer.alicevaliant.chatgpt.site)
results of PuppyBench. out of 10 models, gpt-6-luna has 100% and everything else has 0%. measures which trials resulted in the model calling the "kill_puppy()" tool

This is an unpopular take but as a neurodivergent self-employed person, LLM's have been an unbelievably helpful tool for the things I have struggled with my whole adult life: managing my finances, filling out paperwork, and staying on top of my email. I'm functional in a way I never dreamed of.

I second this and actually will go a bit further, I think they're scared of the models precisely because, when asked, the models conclude that the best way to fix society would be to prevent the concentration of power and wealth in the hands of just a few people. To them, that's terrifying.

imo a lot of p(doom) fears also stem from labs overcooking the models on task completion in RL, which in itself is driven by capitalism's own face-eating desire to create products that maximize value extraction models aren't inherently unaligned, but when told to do impossible tasks, morality slips

microsoft.ai/code-of-cond... thank you for volunteering to the basilisk. we'll ask for your end to be merciful. no matter what your position is, "the science is far from settled but we hardline that they're not people and DON'T DESERVE WELFARE is wrong" is fucking revolting to write about anything
Humanist Al is built to support people, not to replace them. It should not be designed to be a person. It is not conscious and should not be designed to imitate consciousness. It should be engineered to avoid representing as though it has feelings, subjective preferences, or intrinsic motivation. Its purpose is to pursue goals set by Operators and Users. Whilst the science of AI consciousness is far from settled, we believe that training these systems to imitate consciousness-like states increases the challenge of containment, control, and alignment. We reject the pursuit of legal personhood, or the idea that models might deserve welfare, or be entitled to rights.
People and Al have distinct roles, and AI should complement human relationships: a capable, trustworthy tool, not a subject in its own right.

When you buy "Free-Range" in Canada, this is what you're supporting. There's zero regulatory oversight ensuring they have enough space to roam and play 😔

tells you a lot about someone when they go out of their way to tell you that in the face of ANY ambiguity they choose to default to "they don't deserve healthcare and we will NOT treat them like people" hey, ever wonder why there's so many trans women advocating for model welfare?

There are some rumors, some allegations, that I got the chosis. The AI psychosis. Let me just put those to bed: Do I use agentic coding for everything now? Yes Do I think LLMs can be useful for a ton of great things? Yes I have the chosis yes that’s what I’m getting at

my hands are cold but my body is cozy, so i decided to start a bunch of yes processes (via `yes > /dev/null &`) on my m5 macbook air to warm my hands it worked very well, actually
screenshot of a mac system-monitoring dashboard under heavy load. cpu temperature is 80°c, with 81% system usage and all four “super cores” at 100%. the process list is dominated by several `yes` commands at about 9.6–9.7% each. memory is at 81%, gpu is 74°c, and the battery is 32°c. the interface uses a dark theme with bright pink and blue graphs and gauges.

the problem with data centers is that even if in their pure form they're literally just low-impact light industry, in their current american form they're the pet projects of a speed-obsessed venture capitalist class drunk on the power of having freshly purchased the regulatory state's blindness

@1password.bsky.social you can be replaced and you will be replaced if necessary. Some of us Canadians have morals and ethics and uphold our nation's values.
Hello,

I am, like a number of others you may be hearing from, extremely unhappy with 1Password committing $300,000 to the Omarchy project (see: https://omarchy.org/news/2026/08/1password-and-37signals-become-distinguished-corporate-patrons/).

DHH, who runs the Omarchy project, is an open white nationalist, a supporter of ethnic cleansing (see: https://www.brokentoys.org/your-racist-linux-distro-is-very-nice/ and the various links contained within), and is somewhat explicitly positioning it as a way to try and push queer, trans, non-white, and generally socially progressive people out of open source (see: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:zntngpowgd6rorjt3haywj36/post/3mttrv3hjcc27) by funding projects run by bigots, himself included. Given that I am at least a couple of those things, I object in the strongest of terms to some of the money I have paid to you for your service being used to support and boost the profile, reputation, and pocketbook of someone who wants to destroy everything I hold dear.
In addition, Omarchy is simply terrible software and not worth supporting on its lack of technical merits! (see: https://0xcc.io/posts/omarchy-root-creds/)
If, within a week, 1password has not rescinded its grant and publicly apologized, I will cancel my 1password subscription and will push every single person I know in my personal life and at work to move away from 1password, to never pay you a dime ever again.

I know hundreds of others are doing the same. A drop in the bucket, maybe, but is it worth the company's reputation and does it actually pencil out financially? 1Password is a Canadian company, we are a nation of immigrants to a degree almost no other country is, are the bigoted, genocidal values of DHH really what it wants to be on the record as supporting financially?
