I keep a log of compliments I’ve received in a note-taking app on my phone. I take a look at them whenever I’m experiencing impostor syndrome or rejection sensitivity.

Autistic people shouldn’t have to prove their worth through their accomplishments, intelligence, productivity, and usefulness to society in order to be seen as fully human. No matter what your support needs are, you are already worthy, even if others don’t see it.

I think this explains why typical treatments for selective mutism didn’t work for me. Therapists had no idea what actually caused my mutism in the first place because my parents had no idea themselves, so they couldn’t inform therapists about my grandparents.

Ding ding ding! I think I finally figured out why I started whispering. Since my grandparents lived with us and I was completely mute to them, I had to whisper when talking to my parents or sister so that my grandparents wouldn’t overhear my voice.

I only started inherently feeling equal to other human beings just last year, at the age of 33. So that’s 30+ years of my life feeling less than human.

I think where I’m at now is I can now clearly see my mutism was a rational response to everything I experienced in childhood, and it makes me so mad I was made to feel there was something inherently wrong with me ’cos of that, which led to feeling I was fundamentally inferior to other human beings.
