JUSTINE
Chapter Eight

Lukas was a guy Justine liked but wasn’t dating. She wanted to date him but also wanted to date a couple of other guys and wasn’t interested in making a firm commitment to anyone. The problem was that there were two guys she was currently in a casual friends-with-benefits relationship with, and neither of them was Lukas. At that moment, behind the counter of that Arby’s, Justine was starting to think she might be willing to give up her two fuck buddies if it meant she could start something up with Lukas.
He was handsome, intelligent, motivated, and funny. He was currently studying film at UCLA and had grand ambitions to be a successful filmmaker. When she asked him if he wanted to be the next Tarantino or Tim Burton, he laughed and said, “Think more, David Cronenberg, Peter Jackson, David Lynch…” he said, putting down his book and grinning at her.
“I don’t know who David Cronenberg is,” Justine said, “What’s he done?”
Lukas listed off a few movies, mostly his early stuff from before The Fly, and gave her a short but dense overview of Body Horror and The New Flesh. Justine was fascinated and made a point to see all the movies he mentioned. She also added some of the Peter Jackson movies he suggested to the list because the only film of his she’d seen was The Frighteners.
Justine took her broom and walked around the counter to start the nightly clean. It was nine-forty-five, and their shifts were nearly over. They closed at ten but took a half-hour to clean and count out the registers.
