Brioni is sugary sweet and endlessly frustrating—everything Ragnar is looking for in a mate. She needles him and causes mischief, and Ragnar can’t seem to get enough of her brattiness, but he also can’t wrap his tail around the fact that her teasing is genuine evidence of infatuation.

Their attraction is instantaneous, and Ragnar would like to give her the punitive satisfaction she keeps hinting at, but at what cost? Will she continue to visit his reclusive corner of the woods after she gets what she wants? Will she know she has a choice once he gives in to his own possessive and domineering desires? Ragnar would rather give her the friendship he also knows she craves than ruin everything by indulging in the monster he believes he is. The Curse of Broken Shadows by Laura Winter 5 star review. Disclaimer: Laura is my friend! I love her! I really only review books my friends write nowadays because I’m an author and do what I want! I think Curse is 5 stars regardless!

The Curse of Broken Shadows is the beginning of an epic. Epic isn’t a word I use lightly, but the Smoke & Shadow series is of legendary value and breadth both. I really enjoy seeing empire-spanning struggles through the eyes of individuals, and that is the gift we’re given in this book. We don’t experience armies battling in Curse specifically, but we see the fallout and experiences of “ordinary” people who feel destined to change the world. This is exactly the kind of story I love, and I so did!

Brela is our heroine, and she encapsulates that word wholly. She’s made of grit and steel and somehow also kindness and love, yet she embarks on a journey in Curse that absolutely changes her. I love following a heroine who knows exactly who she is—or at least thinks she does only to find out there’s even more to know and she’ll have to be utterly broken to figure it all out. Brela is mysterious and stabby, hardheaded and talented, but she has insecurities and missing pieces that are so easy to get lost in. You’ll feel her pain and want to put up the same walls she does while simultaneously screaming at her to tear them down!

But because Curse is such a lovely chonky book, we get to see its complex world through so many more eyes. Elias, Cason, and Serill all have unique points of view (told in limited third person), but also there’s Farrah who I freaking love. She’s soft and sweet (but can still kill on demand), and is often a voice of reason and affection in a world that is brutal and unforgiving. I’m always drawn to the softies!

The world of Smoke & Shadow is built complexly, so it’s never boring for a single second, and you get to see so much of it including major changes in topography and hellish beasts. You’ll recognize some of the fundamentals used like elemental magic and clashing kingdoms but be delighted by how Winter uses tattoo magic and illustrations. An assassins guild plays a major part in this story and it feels right at home in a world that’s so steeped in blood and trickery. As you’d expect, there’s plenty of shadow magic in this world, and Brela is our Shadow Mommy!

If you want a villainized, badass woman who wields darkness and terror and is absolutely relentless on her journey, you need Brela in your life!

There’s a lot of action, violence, and bloodshed on these pages, which I consider a boon especially because it’s never really violence for violence’s sake. Sure, sometimes it’s fun, but it’s not exploitative or made light of (outside of some friendly stabs and punches, but what’s a little bloodshed between friends, eh?) Warning here: there are some heavy themes and traumatic backstories, but again they’re handled reverently.

The fighting scenes were some of the best I’ve read, detailed enough to know exactly what’s going on, but the pace is still really brisk and never bogged down by needless detail, which is something I personally need in any book. The steamy scenes were quite similarly well done—you know exactly what everyone’s hands are doing but it’s never boring!

I guess that kind of makes sense, right?
