Well, they were right. Our small stores went under almost overnight. Indie authors have no choice now: either sell through Amazon, or make a tenth or less of what you could be making. Reach a smaller audience. Languish. Hindsight is 20/20, of course.

At that time, there was a bit of a hubub with the Grown Folks about "mom and pop stores" and "buying local." They said, "I know the prices are low, but if we spend all our money on the big stores, the small ones will go out of business. Then they'll turn around and jack up the price bc they can!"

You know, I'm not exactly a spring chicken, but I'm not a baby either. I remember when Amazon only sold books, and when they expanded into other things (mostly electronics). Around the same time our small town got a "Wal-Mart Super Center," which sold groceries as well as its usual fare. #Writers
