Poor recruitment, poor strategic planning, no cohesive identity, no plus value moves, no stacking of +Ev transactions, no team style even. Doesn’t matter how hard you train with those limitations. Just a brutal run

@kierdoyle.bsky.social, about a month ago, said that MLS teams would start looking at South African talent. First domino?

No matter how many college games I watch, there’s inevitably one moment when the counting down clock gets me. Sigh.

But also like defend a tiny bit please Boston

020

Austin Buchanan @austinbuchanan.bsky.social · 03/08/2026

Wow that back line shape for Portland is horrendous. Poor denial of entry in the wide area, poor CB shaping, poor box defending

If you want to do a 6 week preseason, which is almost the bare minimum….yeesh. 8 week? Ooof

24, 23, 19 - Lucho turns 30 this year. Lucho is a monster, I loved him at Liverpool but transfer value isn’t just set at direct output for the following year. There’s future transfer value, future production, age curving etc But hype Lucho up, he deserves it.

I know a guy who played under Henry when he was coaching at Montreal and he said Henry would stop training and say why didn’t you see this and execute it? It’s right there? And the general response was always - if we saw what you saw and could do what you did we wouldn’t be here man haha

Biggest difference between US men’s and US women’s - when the women feel pressure they generally thrive - when the men feel it they crumble

Pulisic looks like he’s never played elite soccer before. Wth

The thing Belgium should protest is their best player starting on the bench.

020

Austin Buchanan @austinbuchanan.bsky.social · 30/06/2026

For the record this is like every bad trope of a manager having a say in recruitment. So many will default to this when under pressure too

010

Austin Buchanan @austinbuchanan.bsky.social · 27/06/2026

I think the biggest complement I would give is I would have killed to have this when I was team side

If only England had one of the best dead ball strikers in history, who just so happens to be one of the best open play creative passers ever from his position as well. Might do well against a deep block…..

Through a game and a quarter the US re-press or counter pressure has been amazing

This was phenomenal. The work required for this is honestly incredible. Shouts out. Read this. It’s fucking fun.

The best World Cup tactic remains - “ball go in”

I think the Pochettino stuff highlights a much larger and toxic problem with sports - people often forget the human element, the humanity of the people - players and staff. Everything becomes so focused, and intent, that people forget you’re dealing with actual lives.

I’m not super well versed on WNBA roster rules and mechanisms but can anyone explain why the Valks waived Martin?

Liam Rosenior’s “I realize it’s tough to be fired, but I’ve never been more fired up - here’s ten reasons why and a parting lesson” LinkedIn post is going to do numbers

Austin Buchanan @austinbuchanan.bsky.social · 22/04/2026

I honestly think this is sneaky massive thing about having an analytics group connected to a coach - the pressure is enormous - “hey this is just a bit of randomness, keep going, try to exploit some edges but otherwise, no worries” can keep a coach so much more calm

A lot of times with muscular injuries, the warm up -> bench time -> back to the field can cause a flare up. Starting her means her muscles stay fully ready? My guess here

Conceded 13 shots inside the 18. 5 at the line or inside the 6 yard box. Just surprised here

.12 and .13 (FotMob) xG from open play in this game so far. Have to find the players that are going to create chances on both of these sides

Boston and Bay yesterday (FotMob data) - .04 xG per shot and .05 xG per shot respectively. For Boston, this follows week 1 where they were .04 as well.

The story of the NWSL/USWNT was built on the strengths, abilities, and perseverance of thousands of black women across the landscape of American soccer. Teams really should be honoring them more. Also - it’s just smart business to resonate and connect with your black supporters. This isn’t hard

0172

Austin Buchanan @austinbuchanan.bsky.social · 02/03/2026

Something I think about maybe far too often is just how close the old Stoke teams were to an optimal playing style - they just never quite figured the meat wall out. What could have been

180

Austin Buchanan @austinbuchanan.bsky.social · 27/02/2026

These guys need support because the majority of them don’t make enough money to strike for long at all - this isn’t like NFL, NBA etc. these are guys who love the game and play the game because they love it

052

Austin Buchanan @austinbuchanan.bsky.social · 26/02/2026

If you want to talk about one of the biggest impacts of the NWSLPA it’s this - players feel comfortable enough with the protections to get to start the families they deserve. You heard so often from the prior generations of “having to choose” and while that still exists to a degree, it’s much less
