I feel like "smart tools" needs a bit more nuance, because just because something is using a neural net doesn't mean it's using genAI. In audio there's a huge world of difference between Logic's Mastering Assistant and Suno stem generation, for example.

I shared my thoughts and wanted to list them here as well so folks know where I stand. I encourage you to share your feedback with VRChat as well. Be civil, but be yourself, be passionate, speak your mind honestly.

"I largely agree with the classifications outlined by the graphic in the VRChat post. Minor coding assistance, translations, or other machine-learning-powered tools built into editors that have long existed don't bother me, but placing Generative AI in a position where it is making creative decisions that directly affect the experience of the world is a bridge too far. While I would not say such worlds should be banned outright (nor do I think this is even possible to enforce), I would endeavor to avoid supporting GenAI-based worlds in places where human effort is meant to be rewarded (including the Discover Worlds UI, events like Spookality, or highlights like VRChat's community world showcase), and to enable users to have much finer control over whether they see these things in their day-to-day experience."

"To me, VRChat is largely a vehicle for the human experience in all its forms. It is a platform where you connect to other humans in worlds and avatars built by those same humans. This authenticity matters a great deal to us, as it is one of the few places where many of us feel we can truly be "ourselves", and we have built strong and meaningful connections with others who are genuinely expressing who they are. I fully understand why, to creators who dedicate tremendous amounts of time and energy into hand-crafting experiences for an audience they care deeply about and are often a part of themselves, the increasing use of Generative AI threatens to diminish the value of their work and lower the overall quality of the VRChat experience.

More than that, though, I think the embrace of (and resistance to) Generative AI speaks to bigger issues in the world. GenAI has imposed a very real and devastating cost to human beings. Already many creatives are losing their careers or being forced into soul-crushing new workloads that prioritize productivity over passion because of GenAI. That's not to mention the societal inequality it helps to preserve, the pollution it causes, or the misinformation and deception it enables, all of which have made our lives materially worse. We cannot support those things, and thus we do not support GenAI itself, and to see it be supported or used in places we consider our "safe escape" from the troubles of reality is that much more heartbreaking."

"I think the reason this issue refuses to go away is because it's a microcosm of a societal struggle we're all engaged in every day. So many of us are just exhausted at seeing our quality of life deteriorate while a small number of billionaires tell us what that the terrible future they're promising us is inevitable. We feel powerless to change any of that at the systemic or societal levels, so we opt instead to carve out small curated communities where we *can* influence the way things go. Many of those communities are right here in VRChat, so when we see the company express what we could describe as indifference toward our strongly held principles, we're painfully reminded that VRChat is, after all, just another capitalist enterprise in the real world, subject to all the same pressures and obligations as any other company, and that gnaws at our soul just a little. We just want one spot, one little corner of the world, where all this bullshit isn't standing over our shoulder, waiting to crush our happiness. We really want VRChat to be that place."

I strongly advise taking the time to respectfully write out your thoughts and feelings at the end. It's more than a "slop" issue, it's the stolen work and data, it's the health and environmental impacts, and it's the loss of jobs for humans (especially creatives).

This is absolutely necessary - but is also timed in a way where people might be tempted to not participate in the "No AI" protest, because "they've heard our feedback". So make sure to remember: the protest is also about becoming visible. Let people, not just VRchat, know you care about this.

For ease of access, this is what has been added to the Creator Guidelines - hello.vrchat.com/creator-guid...

Content should accurately represent what a user will experience. Names, tags, descriptions, images, acknowledgements, and previews (including thumbnails) should not be misleading. If your content looks different in VRChat than in the images you've used to showcase it, users may have a negative experience.

I'm not a programmer and I don't know to what extent programmers consider their work to be art so I can't really comment on that. But generative AI has no place in a space designed for people to connect with other people, be it over the meticulously crafted worlds or avatars. Go fill out the form.

Think of what it would be like if VRChat still didn't respond, and all those worlds became private or turned into empty boxes with nothing but a sign. Hundreds of popular worlds all suddenly unavailable. When creators organize, VRChat loses power to the collective.

I've been too quiet about my stance on AI. This does not excuse me from being silent. From a writer who ironically focuses on the escapades of synthetic characters in a recovering dystopia. Creativity is the lifeblood of humanity, and thus it needs to be protected. Support this cause.
