Lanterns was the best thing I've seen this year. And for perspective: 2026 also had Season 2 of The Pitt.

I have an incredibly specific guess.
An advertisement for an article in The Guardian shows a picture of a white-haired person with the caption, "My sister Nicole married OJ Simpson. This is what I wish I had known."

OJ Simpson was not found guilty of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, but was found civilly liable for battery against both and for the wrongful death of Goldman.

Choosing not to provide a major publication with access to a review code doesn't communicate much confidence in their product. I was excited for this one, but I'll definitely hold off until the Game Informer and other outlets have a chance to give full assessments.

A still frame from the 1983 movie Trading Places in which Mortimer Duke pays up on a one dollar bet to his brother, Randolph. The subtitle reads, "You win, Randolph. Ella Langley and Tucker Wetmore ARE dating."

Ultima IV was the first time I'd encountered a game that expected you to choose not to do things just because you could. Stealing, cutting down fleeing enemies, lying to get what you wanted, etc. It was foundational to how I interact with choice-driven RPGs and narrative games to this day.

This is a Day 1 purchase; only waiting for one more hour as I'd also like to pick up Well Dweller based on the glowing recommendation from @theindieinformer.bsky.social Wadjet Eye Games has not missed yet, either as a developer or publisher, and this looks like an awesome RPG to lead into October.

While I'm not immediately familiar with everyone on this list, the cast Atlus brought aboard for Persona 3 Reload was absolutely flawless. It was the element I was most apprehensive about, then the most impressed by. So I have a lot of confidence this will go the same way 😊

Hi everyone, during some routine testing, my company's fire broke loose and burned three communities to the ground. No one is responsible. Fire is a great technology for keeping warm and handling certain types of evidence, so its use must remain completely unregulated.

I can confirm this game was completely hidden from me in Steam unless I searched for "Nighthawks" in the Advanced Search. Really hope Steam can reassess this. I've added it to my Wishlist now, but if I hadn't happened to see this random post, I wouldn't have known it was coming out so soon.

I fully get not wanting to be negative about something that other people put a lot of hard work into. But I saw a YouTube video where 2 guys evicerated Metroid Ravenous as being mindless yellow paint slop for modern audiences. The game won't be out for another 4.5 months. *That's* being negative.

The points you've made here feel like clear and constructive criticism to me. Here are the specific changes they've made, and cumulatively, they've damaged the pacing from what you enjoyed in the first game. I haven't played these games yet so it's very helpful to learn why the first one is better.

I forgot to follow up, but I did get this game on my Steam wishlist a bit after this post. Mystery theme + eerie, off-kilter vibes + high quality FMV looks like *exactly* my jam. But I'll definitely want to play Joni Evers first -- might do them back to back!

I'm enjoying it very much! I enjoy Kyle Chandler in everything, but I've also been very impressed by Aaron Pierre. John Stewart is not an excessively verbal or expressive character, but Pierre still communicates so much through subtle cues. And the story curves off in unexpected directions.

Really love seeing larger creators holding the line against games made through generative AI. Wanderbot has always been very clear about this, and uses his platform to share games made by people with a creative vision rather than reprocessed AI spew. Wanderbot's BlueSky: bsky.app/profile/wand...
A post on YouTube from the "Wanderbots" channel reads:

Hey everyone, I've taken down today's first video (NOT BLOOD DUNGEON) on suspicion of being heavily vibecoded- there's a chance it's legit, but after looking more at the talent tree I have serious doubts (lots of repeats with unique names + slightly changed #'s, for no reason.)

Edit: the developer did confirm that they were using AI as part of the development process, so the video will be staying down.

I have a pretty good eye for AI generated art assets, but things like UI & code are huge blindspots for me and I'm fully reliant on disclosures + developers being honest in those cases. I'll keep trying my best to avoid them all the same, but please don't be afraid to let me know if I accidentally let one through.

As for the AI boosters who will inevitably come crawling to defend slop; save us both the time and energy. It's awful tech made by awful people who stole from millions of people and I have zero interest in hearing arguments in favor of it.

Also, the name "9 to 5" was a widely accepted reference to a standard employment shift in the USA. When the movie was made in 1980, working five 8-hour shifts (9am to 5pm) was understood as making a livable wage which covered food, rent, healthcare, & common necessities. Yes, seriously.

If it were up to me, I'd rather send you & Amanda back in time to work on Life Is Strange: Double Exposure. I think that game was made with a lot of heart, talent, ambition, and haphazard mismanagement which could have been largely mitigated through your particular skill sets.

This is how I feel about Playstation 1-style graphics where the textures don't adhere properly to the shapes and get all warped when perspective changes. I was very pro-2D sprites during that whole era, and still prefer the aesthetic from either side of that early-3D look.

In addition to being an excellent podcast, it's also refreshing to have a clean, descriptive header image. So many other thumbnails now looks like they were made by an AI trained exclusively to churn out Garbage Pail Kids.

I specifically remember seeing a sizzle reel for Command & Conquer up on the screens at our mall Electronics Boutique. The combination of FMV actors and (for the time) awesome CGI and sleek interface flourishes sold me on it instantly. Loved the first game, along with Red Alert 1 & 2!

This is truly helpful information. I usually disable any auto-advance option because it often ruins the cadence, inserting unintended pauses between lines. The Persona games are good examples of where it just doesn't work well. Knowing to keep it on for Mermaid's Mask is really helpful, so thanks!

I just completed a replay of Alpha Sapphire earlier this year (partially because Latias was somehow one of the legendaries I didn't have anywhere in my colllection) and I thought it was still excellent. I have a particular soft spot for the setting and Pokemon from Gen 3, Awakening was great too!

When my nephew comes by and wants something to play, I take the Ninja Gaiden 2 disc out of its case and put it into the Xbox. He's playing in 60 seconds. And if he isn't feeling that one, here's Asura's Wrath, Driver San Francisco, or Dark Sector. Physical media extremely valuable to me.

With today's news from Sony, it feels like a good time to confirm that this 2026 playthrough of a 2016 Pokemon game was accomplished by putting the physical game cartridge I own into the physical 3DS I own. I never had to worry if a digital storefront would still honor my purchase a decade later.

Between ➡️skyrocketing hardware prices ➡️development cycles that take longer than an elementary school education ➡️the promise that "buying" a game only entitles you to access for as long as the licensing parties feel like it the value proposition here is fantastically off-putting.

I'm fairly certain that in the entire history of console games being available digitally, starting with the 360, I've purchased fewer than 10 non-physical games. The specific reason I buy console games is to retain them on physical media. I go out of my way to get them on disc whenever possible.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember enjoying Shut In, the 2016 movie starring Naomi Watts, and that it had a wintery setting. I also rewatched A Simple Plan earlier this year -- another solid movie with lots of snowy rural locations.
