#NASC2026 Day 3 began with a keynote from Dr Bryce Barker. He emphasised the importance of an anthropological approach and ethnography in archaeology, and how this can help to challenge historic and colonial narratives. Great to see relevance throughout adjacent disciplines for the ASHB community.

#nasc2026 has had some really great bioarchaeology presentations so far: "Research in the margins" highlighting historical erasure of marginalised groups and decolonising narratives. It's been a great conference for ASHB members thus far and we are excited for the final day tomorrow.

And that's a wrap! What a fantastic and inspiring #IFAA2026 conference. Dr Luca Fiorenza gave a great plenary on dental evolution, a fitting anthro end for our ASHB attendees. We had a great ASHB turnout, and we are keen to see everyone again soon at our own conference at the end of the year!

What a whirlwind yesterday for day 2, not a second to stop at #IFAA2026! The plenary talk by Dr Sue Mayers was definitely a highlight, it was amazing to see her research and the movements of ballet dancers in action.

Why academic societies, as well as journals, have an important role to play in ensuring appropriately rigorous standards in their disciplines: here's discredited race scientist Philippe Rushton acknowledging the role that the conferences of two academic societies played in developing his ideas
Acknowledgements section of a paper of Rushton's

I thank C.D. Ankney, T.A. Bons, A.J. Figueredo, L.S. Gottfredson, A.R. Jensen, and G.F. Miller for critical comments on a previous draft. Some of the data were presented at the Human Behavior and Evolution Society, Amherst, MA, June 2000, the International Society for Research in Intelligence, Newport Beach, CA, December 2003, and the Human Behavior and Evolution Society, Berlin, Germany, July 2004.The title of that paper, published in the Elsevier journal Intelligence in 2004:

Placing intelligence into an evolutionary framework or how g fits into the r–K matrix of life-history traits including longevity

Paragraph from that paper:

The underlying explanation is that longevity is a coevolved adaptation with brain size and intelligence, and it is intelligence that underlies social stratification. As harmful environmental factors are removed and so no longer account for as much variance, that which remains must be increasingly due to genes. Because larger brains are more costly to build and maintain than smaller brains, they need to be housed in stronger, longer lived bodies (see also Miller, 2000). Darwinian evolution is frugal, not prodigal.
