1. Major exclusive breaking news: Marco Rubio may have just banned trans foreigners seeking visas with correct gender markers from US Entry. A new cable, effective immediately, says visas must contain assigned sex at birth and should be rejected if they don't. Subscribe to support our journalism.

A new state department cable, meant to target transgender athletes, indicates a potential broader application to all transgender visas, which it states must contain "sex at birth."

Thoughts about the garbage-fire that is Emilia Pérez: "And because the stalker cannot penetrate her, she must die...the film will never escape the (misunderstood) bones of the dead trans woman it builds itself upon" More: letterboxd.com/auriblooms/f...

...more broadly. We're disposable *mother figures* who—when not compliant—will not just be seen as "unwomanly women" but ostracized for not taking on our designated (subordinated) role within gender relations

160

Aurelia~ @auriblooms.bsky.social · 21/02/2025

Realizing that the emotional labor men expect from women (to sort out men's mental problems in a one-way, parasitic relationship) is a typical of heteronormative misogyny really clarified how trans women—in extension of this—are excessively seen as an emotional dumping ground...

next ttrpg character I play needs to have a character class that absolutely does not match their job. I need a druid that's an accountant; I need a barbarian that's a therapist; I need warlock who's a line cook

I could say much more but to end this, I'll say that this is why we see Tashi light up when the boys end up /really/ playing tennis again at the end. The "Come on!" she gives is her remembering what she really wants when the boys really start to "play with each other" again

ALT: a woman in a crowd says come on in a stadium

020

Aurelia~ @auriblooms.bsky.social · 24/12/2024

She doesn't care who wins because she wants to see the "match" between them. Her erotic interest is not the boys, it's the "tennis" (real and figurative). Halfway through the film, her spat with Patrick makes her forget this, leading to the conflict of the film

110

Aurelia~ @auriblooms.bsky.social · 24/12/2024

The most notable change Challengers makes to this classic formula is that Tashi is only there to watch those boys "play some good fucking tennis." She doesn't want either of them to be in love with her (as she says in the cafeteria), she wants to watch them "play tennis" (fuck)

110

Aurelia~ @auriblooms.bsky.social · 24/12/2024

Said another way, fighting for Tashi is the only acceptable means for Art and Patrick to have such an erotically intense relationship with each other (on and off the court). It's the classic love triangle that allows for plausible deniability within a homophobic society Something like this

120

Aurelia~ @auriblooms.bsky.social · 24/12/2024

Art's love for Tashi is not a love for her as a person. Rather, he loves her because: a) she represents the heteronormative ideal that he (as a man) should want; and b) his fight to "win" her is a deferral of his desire to be with Patrick

110

Aurelia~ @auriblooms.bsky.social · 24/12/2024

When asked if he loves Tashi, Art's constant refrain of "Who wouldn't be in love with you?" evidences the fact that she is the supposedly ideal object of heteronormative desire: a "hot woman" who has everything. Art knows he should love or want her... but doesn't

120

Aurelia~ @auriblooms.bsky.social · 24/12/2024

It's literally just two guys getting off together while fetishizing a woman (porn) because their own internalized homophobia means they must defer their desires for each other on to an appropriate object (a woman) within the regime of heterosexuality.

120

Aurelia~ @auriblooms.bsky.social · 24/12/2024

As soon as you understand this is a masturbation scene where they're "definitely thinking about a girl and not each other" then you're REALLY starting to watch Challengers It parallels the story of their first time masturbating together where they "thought about Kat Zimmerman"

I want to add a photo from earlier in the day that I took with my wonderful academic cohort but privacy. Just imagine 5 of the most intelligent women you've ever met in your life hanging out pool side and you'll get the idea
