I will 100% open a pirate school. My husband took up fencing for a minute several years ago, and we have floated a couple of rivers, so that's like half the curriculum already taken care of.

I was raised in a faith healing cult which waged a lot of lawsuits over the twentieth century to make this sort of thing legal. It breaks my heart every time.

The mother also shared a meme that references a Bible verse from the story of Job, whose loyalty God tested by allowing Satan to destroy all the blessings in his life, including his 10 children. Women from her religious sect who reacted to the post include a mom whose 4 children died.

A mother posted a family photo on social media in 2022 that shows three kids and a baby. That baby died. The next family photo in 2024 shows the kids, now older, with a different baby. That baby died -- followed in 2025 by another. Three dead sons in 4 years. www.propublica.org/article/idah...

Parents of children in these stories haven't responded to letters and text messages. An unordained elder in one of the four Idaho Followers of Christ churches told us the reason parents keep their children away from the doctor is to teach them to avoid the sin of turning to medicine as adults.

But for most of Idaho's history, it DID require parents to give children medical care. And news coverage from the 1960s told us how officials saved the life of at least one child in this sect, because back then, they still could. That changed in the 1970s. www.propublica.org/article/idah...

This wasn't the only family to have four children die. In another, four babies died of various ailments over the course of 11 years. The brothers whose burials are shown in this photo died in 2022, 2024 and 2025 from untreated infections. www.propublica.org/article/idah...

Emma Joyce was sick and vomiting for days when she died. The next summer, Ava Joan got sick: wouldn't eat or drink, rapid breathing, and her vomit was black. It was untreated diabetes. The girls' toddler brother was next to die. Years later, another brother. www.propublica.org/article/idah...

NEW: Emma Joyce died at 3 years old. The next year, her sister Ava Joan died. Then their brother died from the same complication of untreated diabetes that killed Ava Joan. Later, a fourth sibling died. Their parents believed in prayer, not medicine.

This is a very sad day for journalism in Boise and Idaho. The Statesman, for all of its imperfections, has been a leader in Idaho journalism for 160 (!) years. That's coming to an end now.

At least one child's life was saved: a boy in the 1960s, critically ill from measles, whose parents belonged to the Followers of Christ faith-healing religion. After his sister died, officials sought to intervene. The judge told his father, "The law governs conduct. Religion governs opinion."

As people in uniform ask Malachi’s parents about his birth, death and the two days in between, members of the family’s church watch from folding chairs. People come and go from the bedroom; one woman cradles a sleeping toddler. In other Idaho households, his death would be investigated as a crime.

A few other suggestions from the Idaho AG's office to the DOJ regarding election integrity: -- "voluntarily dismiss your lawsuit against Secretary McGrane" -- look at the cases McGrane sent DOJ long ago for possible criminal prosecution -- "cease further communications with my client" re. lawsuit
