Kemi Badenoch wants to take Britain back to Thatcher’s foundations. My argument is that we never really left them. Different tenants. New wallpaper. Same house. Britain needs more than another round of redecorating. attitudeblog.pagecord.com/maggies-house

Aye - right at the end to correct the impression given by a quick glance. The problem is, as every journalist knows, a great many people read the headline, the standfirst and then move on. I expect that sort of making the facts fit the headline from right wing tabloid rags - not the Grauniad.

1,500 charities exposed by a single hack in July. Far-right aggro against the RNLI in September. Your own article says there’s no evidence the RNLI was specifically targeted. So why use a standfirst and story construction inviting readers to connect the two? I expect better from The Guardian.

Actually less than half of all UK PMs since 1900 have *initially* entered office by winning a general election. Looked at historically, it's more or less 'normal practice'. Our GEs may look more and more presidential, but we do not (yet) have a presidential system. Just sayin'.

Offer me a vision of a future not built on tinkering with Thatchers failed social / economic settlement. I concede they are doing some good things, but it's not enough and it all seems prone to U-turns. When the foundations are rotten, redecorating won't stop the house falling down.

Chilli Devil Ian @attitudewear.co.uk · 02/06/2026
Immigration wasn't a top three issue for voters until Farage started getting disproportionate media coverage, and Starmer gave his "island of strangers" speech instead of offering a competing vision of what immigration does for England (We have a different attitude in Scotland).

I don't think we're that far apart. I do think it's a mistake to chase Reform voters who may not have been Labour voters anyway) when you're leaking more to the left. I don't expect things to change overnight, but there's no clear indication of that change coming. That is Starmer's / Reeves' job.

2/2 If not but you think that settlement is necessary & successful, fair enough. But then you might want to explain why Labour have become so unpopular. I welcome multi-party politics if it brings genuine change. I just hope it's not to Reform. Not glued to the screen all day, but I will respond.
110
Chilli Devil Ian @attitudewear.co.uk · 31/05/2026
1/2 Happy to discuss specifics, but which point do you think is wrong, and why? My argument isn't that Labour have done nothing. It's that they're still operating largely within Thatcher's economic and political settlement. If you think that settlement has been substantially reversed, tell me where.
210
Chilli Devil Ian @attitudewear.co.uk · 30/05/2026
10/10 The result is the dawn of multi-party politics in the UK. Since Thatcher, General Elections have felt less like a choice of left or right and more like a choice between different managers of the same system. When voters start believing both parties are the same, they look elsewhere.
100
Chilli Devil Ian @attitudewear.co.uk · 30/05/2026
9/10 My point remains, when you look at the totality of government policy, Thatcher moved this country significantly to the right, and rather than trying to counter that both Blair and Starmer have at best done little, and in some areas pushed even further right
