A dean at a previous institution got real into the "NFTs are the future" thing and as a result we saw ads of him talking about the university's NFT efforts well into 2023 lol

📢 Out Now! V-Dem Dataset v16 & the V-Dem Institute Democracy Report 2026 💾 The V-Dem Dataset: v-dem.net/data/the-v-d... 📰 The Report "Unraveling The Democratic Era?”: v-dem.net/publications... 📈 Explore the new data with the V-Dem Graphing tools: v-dem.net/graphing/gra... #PoliSky #PoliSciSky 1/3
Two map graphs show the state of liberal democracy according to the V-Dem Liberal Democracy index for 2025 and 2024. The higher the score (or darker blue), the more democratic the country. Lower scores (or dark red) mean less democratic. While North and South America, Western Europe and Oceania are mostly in the blue, most parts of Asia and Africa are in the red in 2025.
In comparison to the map for 2024, the map graph for 2025 shows democratic backsliding in some traditionally stable democracies in Western Europe and North America, in particular the USA, United Kingdom and Italy.

This year we asked about Climate News User Needs and the gap is clear. They value coverage that informs and explains climate issue but feel media can do better. It also fits with how audiences see journalistic roles here: more as educators/curators/watchdogs than e.g., gatekeepers.

The News is Not Made for Me scale is an 8-item scale that investigates the growing gap between news providers and audiences as well as audience inequality gaps related to news use and benefits. It gets at what we call "agnostic" features of news - such as pace, language, and access.
A screenshot of a table from the manuscript. A purple header is labeled "Item" followed by the 8-items of the scale and a research note on alternating gray and white rows.

Using a panel survey in Brazil & UK, we see that people who feel the most alienated from news tend to be younger, lower SES, have lower news self-efficacy, greater interest in soft news, and have more attention problems. These findings highlight the overwhelming relentlessness of news cycles.
Coefficient plot from the manuscript titled "Linear Regression Results with News is Not Made for Me as DV" with variables on the y-axis and coefficient estimates on the x-axis. There are pink lines for UK results and teal lines for Brazil results.

I guess I just think anyone who says stuff like "The groupchats are the memetic upstream of mainstream opinion" should be stuffed in a locker and never let out. These groupchats are only powerful because of the sheer concentration of wealth. Your crowd isn't brilliant or clever. You're just rich.
"The group chats are 'the memetic upstream of mainstream opinion," says some VC asshole who now works at Trump's White House.
