Why AI is exposing design’s craft crisis
AI didn’t create the craft crisis in design — it exposed the technical literacy gap that’s been eroding strategic influence for over a decade.

I have been writing this post about the economics of open source, on and off, for 13 years. I wasn't expecting to end up at "Microsoft should send corporations a huge bill" but nothing else we've tried has worked. seldo.com/posts/nobody-pays-for-ope…

Nobody pays for open source. We can force them to. | Seldo.com
Thirty years of voluntary funding schemes haven't paid open source maintainers because asking doesn't scale. The real money already flows — to JFrog, Docker, Sonatype — at the registry layer. The fix: registries charge companies for supply (they already do), then route a slice automatically to the maintainers who make that supply worth having.

Can't wait to put this everywhere in my UIs 🤪 this API feels pretty nice and overall view transitions are just so cool. Reaally helping bridging the gap with native apps

Good reminder to everyone that these concepts are not what they claim to be. To React's defense (not that it needs it), they insist a lot about deriving data and not storing it, and shifting to more server-driven architecture. FB itself seems to have long relied on relay/graphql driven state.

npm increasingly feels like a zombie org under GitHub. As someone who's been around the JS ecosystem and part of multiple OSS orgs for years, what I'm seeing isn't just "big co moves slow." It's quiet neglect of critical infrastructure the entire JS world runs on. A short thread 🧵

Looks super interesting, congrats on the release! Definitely going to dig that code to see how you're using `useActionState`, as there is not much prior art out there with async APIs

Not sure I would recommend to DIY everything, but I got to start a few other projects with React-router/Vite and the experience definitely has been better. It's not perfect yet, but no time was wasted on weird issues and limitations, things are simpler to reason about and maintain.

Did you try to drag-drop the file into the slide? I think if you use the "Insert" menu it should at least open a dialog where only supported files are selectable.

When you look at the repo to see what they're working on, it's so much engineering effort spent on caching, turbopack/webpack, and fixing security problems... I know they're working hard and respect the skills of their members, but results really are not there to show for it.

The year is 2026, I still lose so much time to Next.js chocking on minor issue. Forgot to add a "use client"? You'll get minified error in an unrelated file. Forgot a parenthesis in a CSS rule of your emotion component? Your whole layout is broken, good luck finding the problem.

On top of the submitted PR with a fix has really nothing obvious about it. How are average users supposed to guess they should split files at that point? Speaks volume about the framework.

Such a good episode. I had to listen to it more than once to digest everything... and a month later I'm learning things again. Maybe a lot of interviews with Kent I've listen to were a bit more about general views on software, this one felt a lot more relatable.

Sounds like great news, very much looking forward to playing with that! I have been trying to use transitions wherever possible and did run in some occasional limitations. I was on the verge of making a small PR to make async transitions easier with fetchers.

It's definitely a tricky ethics issue. Some could argue it's ok to take their money to do something good with it. Imho and I believe people like Rich do as well, it is only worth it if they have full freedom on their project. e.g. a donation with no return. Being on payroll may complicate that?

I think because events allow better decoupling, at scale they actually may allow better code-splitting and several teams working on the same app concurrent?

In our engineering book club at Vanta, we’re currently reading through _Learning Domain-Driven Design_ by Vlad Khononov, and in last week’s discussion I was forcefully reminded of the original definition of “tech debt” by Ward Cunningham: how your *knowledge* outstrips what’s actually in the code.

I'm still struggling with this btw. My @nextjs.org is all up-to-date, yet the devtools says the Timeline profiler is "only available for React >18", and exploring components or profiling is a festival of errors making it a terrible experience. I could not find anything in issues.

Remember how @gitlab.com got 2.6x faster builds and ~100x less memory consumption when using @rolldown.rs? Now, with all the native plugins enabled, they are down to 22s. That is ~7x faster than Vite, ~half the time compared to using native resolver before and 43x faster than their webpack build 🔥

One of my favourite CoverDrop details: out-of-band verification of the trusted organization key which signs the entire key hierarchy. Its digest is included in the imprint of every printed Guardian newspaper, removing the need to trust CAs 🔑🗞️ more details: www.coverdrop.org
The picture shows a smartphone and the imprint of a newspaper. The smartphone displays a screen from the SecureMessaging feature showing a key digest. The newspaper imprint shows the same digest. The digest consists of a number of randomly-looking letters and digits.

Because most client devices are now battery powered some (or all) of the time, we "get" more CPU every year, but when that only turns into more cheap, slow devices being sold, *the average speed can regress*. And that's exactly what happened over the past decade.

I still prefer this unfortunate situation of a benevolent corp to underfunded OSS. If Vercel can afford that then I'd like FAANGs to fund hundred of OSS people full-time. I know they do open-source a lot of stuff but it tends to be the public version of something they use internally, not the same.

Agree. Hiring full-time multiple maintainers of multiple frameworks sounds like a good boost to level up the whole ecosystem. Particularly welcome that they spend money on this instead of hiring more AI programmers like the market probably tells them to.

Sure it wasn't a great UI, but they just made it worse by adding more interactive tidbits. I can hear @infrequently.org in the background saying "this is everything that is wrong with React-driven frontend development" I guess it's still a beta and they'll fix some bugs but it's a shame.

Wow #Github PR review's new UI is *not* a good experience. Things jumping everywhere, buttons have no immediate feedback (necessary when they still have high latency), disabling whitespace still refreshes the whole page but now with a CLS festival.

I feel an under-discussed negative aspect of Next.js is how it makes React Devtools error and crash all the time, that makes debugging and profiling very hard, or almost impossible. React's devtools overall have been very unstable for years IME, it's a very frustrating aspect of the framework.

Only alternative left I could find is to have a piece of state that you pass to `useBlocker` and set to true just before the submit starts, so you can be sure the blocker is triggered. Which is very unintuitive and not really documented/in tutorial.

Aubin 🇵🇸 @atraversay.bsky.social · 16/06/2025
A way to limit it is to use pass a boolean as an argument but then I can't use the more powerful callback arg. You can't be smart, checking the navigation state to apply the callback argument, because well... the navigation has started so it's too late to block it.

Rules of hooks of course disallow you to call it conditionally. I had to dig the implementation to see that it just silently uses the last entry, but I don't think there's any guarantee about what's the last, since it's added to the queue in an effect.

Got confused by React Router's useBlocker API again today. I guess that's a good example of how a few bad decisions ruin an API. Using more than 2 `useBlocker` on a page is disallowed and will show a warning but... the warning doesn't tell you why.
