She couldn’t see the man’s hand from behind the bar, but if she had calculated it correctly, there was a seventy-four percent chance that he was holding two kings and three different nine cards— a full house. With a hand like that, he was in the perfect position to win. But he was wrong. He was going to lose.
Val didn’t know this because of mathematics, however. She knew this because the man sitting across from him never played fair. Why would he? He was the owner of the joint, and if there was anything that Maximillian Eulio liked more than playing a dirty game of poker, it was getting away with it.

PITCH:
Tai’s terrified of humans. Everyone is. Violent pack hunters, humans are notorious for their strength, sharp teeth, and carnivorous appetites. But the ship’s cook is safe among the multispecies crew of the cargo hauler Coreward Baker: everyone knows the warrior species rarely leave their own space. Then Captain Raz hires Clarke, a human horticulturist.
Even after Tai overcomes their fear, they can’t stand Clarke. She’s bossy. Annoying. Useless in the galley, bad in a space suit. She might as well be cargo. Worse, she’s intent on befriending Tai—and why can’t they stop thinking about her, anyway?
That’s when things go wrong. As Tai starts to realize their feelings for Clarke, they’re horrified to learn that nobody on their crew of dropouts and runaways is quite who they seem, least of all Clarke. And it’s no coincidence. Raz reveals they’ve each been handpicked for a heist he’s spent years planning—and no one’s allowed to say no.

“Don’t let it hear you say that,” the first worker laughed. She made a show of looking for Humans, her eyes darting from table to table.
It. I frowned. I knew the workers’ language distinguished between people and things, and ‘it’ was an unkind choice of words at best.
The second worker shuddered. “I don’t know why we let them come here.”
The first laughed. “Are you going to stop them?”

Al remembered scampering to his first shift, lost in the sea of day-dresses and overcoats. He’d been nine, his parents bedridden with rattling coughs and burning fevers. Stage one of the Rot, common in their line of work. They had been whalers—still were, presumably—and time ashore without work was brutal. Time sick was even worse. They had cut the heating to keep food on the table. To protect him. They had thought Al hadn’t understood what was happening, but he had.
The factory foreman had made him crawl under the roaring boiler to stick his hand between the cogs and clear up jamming. He’d had to exhale fully to fit under the tightest spots, bumping his head when he turned. It had only been for a month, but he’d had nightmares of being buried alive ever since. That was part of why he’d eventually gone to the public church schools, studying for the University’s Apprentice exam, learning reading, reasoning, rhetoric.
He had been nothing back then. Just another idiot with a dream, barely seventeen and flush with pride. He had told his parents he wouldn’t go on that last whaling tour, had shown them his acceptance letter. The proudest day of his life. The most shameful day of theirs.
“Don’t think you’re better than us,” mother had said. “We fed you, clothed you, and put a roof over your head, and you piss your life away on pride?”
Al picked up his pace.
