I wonder if it is really a reaction to increased risk or just a bit of a sulk because UK wont do something the US is demanding in response to the events

So it's goodbye to the triple lock, hello to the bounded triple lock then? I like the way that really, it's a pretty limited technocratic change (with admittedly big fiscal impact in the long run, in theory) that's being portrayed as a massive political change by both those opposed and in favour

That might imply that prosperity depends on a steadily declining quality of customer service, which would be unfortunate

Unless we've sprouted some extra RAM and GPU fabs that seems optimistic, 60-80% of the cost is the imported HW Does a US company spending 40bn on HW from Taiwan & China and then storing it in the UK help?

It seems significant that you can see thousands of comments about the EU insisting the UK sign up to the Euro before rejoining, and thousands more on how the UK public won’t agree to that. But pretty much nothing on whether it would be a good idea or not in itself for either party

Made of Triangles @atomictriangles.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
No, but i think it’s trap that can be set by thinking about the euro etc from primarily a position of campaigning advantage rather then intrinsic benefits and problems
000
Made of Triangles @atomictriangles.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
This is what I think of as the 'single campaign fallacy'. There are people in favour of them, they will be want to campaign for them and making a big show of telling them not to will be more counterproductive than letting them do so and politely disagreeing

Fair enough, though that still feels more tautological than causal on its own

Countries with lower "Not in Education, Employment or Training" rates get there by more education and employment? I don't find that hard to believe and it seems a sensible way to employ resources, I'm just confused as to why the chart is supposed to add something to what appears true by definition?

Okay, *another* future pensions crisis. It's not just the demise of DB pensions though, the demise of assumptions underpinning DC pensions, the demise of home ownership, and demographics.

Made of Triangles @atomictriangles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I do suspect that CPI rather than earnings is scheduling a future pensions crisis, but it doesn't seem a terrible plan outside of that

That’s a bit of a “mad cult responds to claims the cult is mad” statement
000
Made of Triangles @atomictriangles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Doesn't it need pension relative to some level of poverty measurement though for full context? Otherwise it's a bit 'numbers go up' without a sense of what the numbers mean in the real world.

Made of Triangles @atomictriangles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That might be a trap for them. A noisy and feverish campaign in favour of no change might repel those who want a quiet life and offer nothing to those who want change
010
Made of Triangles @atomictriangles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I'll put it on the record now that using CPI rather than Earnings as the triple-lock replacement is a political and fiscal crisis scheduled for the future
001
Made of Triangles @atomictriangles.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
And the decline begins. Ok. The decline accelerates.
000
Made of Triangles @atomictriangles.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Do the numbers add up? From what I've seen the triple lock isn't to different from any earnings lock and trends suggest that savings there are going to be spent multiple times over on housing benefit for pensioners soon, with the side effect that poor housing will accl. people into social care.

If I was an evil foreign state intent on causing havoc and security incidents in the UK, I'd not bother with complex bomb or assassination plots I'd just hire some random blokes to nick transit vans, park them near potential targets and run away 90% of the disruption for 10% of the effort

I think it's the "Everyone works in marketing now" problem. You could hope that would just mean people would be better at presenting the positive sides of their ideas, but in practice it probably drives a feedback loop and filter that distorts what gets put forward

The way 'AGAIN' is typeset makes me imagine it's a change tracking comment that accidentally made it through to the printers. "HOPE" "AGAIN?"

Unless we're afraid hundreds of thousands are going to become self-employed tiktok influencers, I'm not sure what the problem with them leaving to fill existing vacancies is If they're leaving and can't be replaced because the pay and conditions are crap, there is a pretty obvious fix

AB: "I don't think you get the welfare bill down with crude cuts. It plunges people into crisis and they show up in other parts of the system which end up costing more." LK: "Yeah, you've said this before, but I'm looking for a specific commitment you will cut the bill by the next election." WOW

They just seem to have missed that a lot of left leaning voters that are not too deeply into policy or internal Labour politics just really, really don't like seeing the government do what they feel is victimising people who are already victims

That would imply that there is great value in modestly increasing the tax they pay. If the loss of one individuals tax would be so great then a small 5-10% increase in the amount they pay would also be significant, and carefully judged - since they haven't left yet - possible without losing them

What's the level of confidence in the figures? It seems to me a huge measurement problem - output value debatable (generated many wooden dollars at previous jobs), hours data questionable (for example I know my old timesheets were true but also bullshit), recurring value from old output invisible...

Even without being anti AI It’s a struggle to believe that anyone with a competent understanding of what an LLM is and does could think it suitable to perform that task. Summarise, strip it down to the core or produce notes and references to help a human reviewer sure. But not that

"after" would suggest that, "over" does not. If we're being generous a amateur outfit might be given benefit of the doubt in presuming they were saying 'over' because the video of the offence caused the arrest, but I don't think 'amateur outfit' is a reasonable description of the BBC

That doing the right thing has a cost is rarely a very good reason for not doing the right thing. Sometimes the cost will be too high, but that argument has to be won by the person claiming it, not just asserting 'a not very good thing might happen as a consequence'

Given the old-tory anti-Truss vote in SW Norfolk & the 'spoilers' in many Lab constituencies - both cases where people couldn't bring themselves to vote for the obvious protest choice - I wonder if that might mean a number of significant localised deviations to the model are possible

I guess important can read as 'urgent' though, so it might or might not indicate priority if we presume people aren't carefully weighing the lead times of solutions and adjusting for it

I think it's usually worth remembering that in terms of day to day thought, 1/3 of the UK hates the EU but doesn't know why, 1/3 loves the EU but doesn't know why and 1/3 doesn't care. Those that know enough to have a reason are just a rounding error at the level of the overall population

Have you allowed for climate/latitude effects? I notice that the bigger reduction in gas use correlated a bit with latitude and being further west. Milder winters might have the same effect

In a similar vein, one of the reasons the Tech industry is the way it is, is how copyright and patents work, which is an irony considering how AI is now interacting with artists and writers

You need to be explicit in the first place that you want it to provide direct links and to double check they are correct before presenting them. Then (if it has search capability) and is decently capable it will generally do that if the objects of your interest are searchable and directly available

I am obviously crazy for thinking that a Def Secretary arguing for a big increase in spending wouldn’t familiarise himself the the fiscal position that determines the terms of the discussion

Scaring the bollocks off potential customers is just traditional Tech marketing. Usually it is "if you don't buy our latest product bad things will happen" but "our product is so powerful it is dangerous" is the same tune in the end

Not really a question of sizes, just that the % of committed labour voters is now small enough that anything with significant support or hate is going to be majority non-labour supporters

Is it that their focus has switched from governing to managing being the government? Effectively the metric of success has stopped being 'are we changing the country in a positive way (according to our ideas of what will work)' to 'are we maximising our VI share'?
