SUZUKI Shonen（鈴木松年 Japanese, 1848-1918） The Monarch of the Mountain 1880-1900

This contemplative Meiji-period woodblock print, titled "The Monarch of the Mountain" (c. 1880–1900) by Suzuki Shōnen (1848–1918), showcases the artist’s mastery in translating dynamic brushwork into graphic form. The vertical composition captures a solitary stag standing atop a towering, jagged crag against a serene, atmospheric mountain landscape.

Perched at the highest peak, the small silhouette of the stag gazes outward, conveying an overwhelming sense of quiet solitude and majesty. Shōnen utilizes sweeping ink washes and broad, expressive tonal gradations to model the sheer, dramatic face of the mountain, while delicate sprigs of pampas grass (susuki) dot the rocky slopes below. In the midground on the right, a pale moon dips low behind a lower mountain ridge, adding a poetic, misty tranquility to the expanse. The lower left corner is completed by the artist’s signature "Shōnen" (松年) accompanied by his red seal, bringing balance to a masterpiece that celebrates the quiet majesty of nature.
