I originally drew the sketch for this years ago for a huge project that ultimately never reached completion. I drew many sketches for it but only ever finished a few of them, and this one was my favourite of those; I thought it was about time I did something with it.

The Rains Of Elgin In late Triassic Scotland, the Carnian Pluvial Event has begun and the dry scrubland is transformed by rain. An Ornithosuchus shelters from the showers alongside two Saltopus. Outside a herd of Hyperodapedon are unbothered by the downpour and graze on ferns.
A large brown Ornithosuchus shelters from the rain in a cave that it has made its' den. To the left, a pair of green Saltopus have entered the cave, also to shelter. Outside, the constant rain has encouraged a carpet of ferns to grow over the usually dry landscape, and a herd of brown and yellow Hyperodapedon graze unbothered by the downpour.

Elginia Watches The World Burn As the Permian ends, an Elginia watches as the only oasis for miles is destroyed; dried out by prolonged drought caused by rising global temperatures, then set alight by lightning, the only thing the storm clouds brought this year.
Elginia watches from a sand dune peppered with a few shrubs while in the distance, clouds of smoke fill the sky as the only oasis for miles burns in a huge fire.

the return of #Paleostream flocking!!! this week we sketched Cephalaspis, Sclerocormus (mine is munching on an Ophiceras), Eoceras, and Praearcturus (mine is amongst Aglaophyton and Horneophyton clusters)
a Cephalaspis disturbs the sediment in hopes of finding something to eat

Cephalaspis is a jawless fish from the Lower Devonian of Europe and North America. it was popularised by its appearance in Walking With Monsters, however, the depiction there makes the animal taller than it was, in actuality it was much flatter. it had a horseshoe-shaped head, and a heavily armoured body with two pectoral fins and no pelvic finsa Sclerocormus surfaces with its next snack in its mouth, an unlucky Ophiceras

Sclerocormus is an ichthyosauriform from the Early Triassic of Anhui, China. it was very pin-headed as opposed to its relatives, and had a unique arrangement of pebble-like teeth it used to crunch down on hard-shelled prey like ammonites, belemnites, nautiloids, etc.

Ophiceras is an ammonite from the Early Triassic of Asia, Europe, and North America. it's a small to medium sized ammonite that had coarse ridges as adults, the one ive depicted isnt fully grownan empty Eoceras shell is viewed through the lens of a microscope, sand grains surround it

Eoceras is a shell from the Early Cambrian of Shaanxi, China. it was described as the earliest known cephalopod, however, some have pointed out that its anatomy matches hyoliths, a group of extinct shelled invertebrates. it was very small being only around 3mm long.during the night, a mother Praearcturus is illuminated by an artificial light from above. she walks through a cluster of Aglaophyton and Horneophyton to reach the water. her young cling to her back as she takes them in

Praearcturus is a large extinct scorpion from the Devonian of Britain. it was around 80cm long from head to the tip of the tail and had five large immovable fins on its trunk. i depicted it taking care of its young as all extant scorpions give live birth and take care of their young, so i dont see this behaviour as unlikely.

Aglaophyton (front) and Horneophyton (back) are Devonian plants known from Rhynie Chert in Scotland. While not found with Praearcturus it's likely some forms coexisted. they both looked like simple branching plants with sporangia (reproductive organs) at post of the tips of the stems

We are aware that during one of this year’s talks, controversial statements about the promotion of generative AI in palaeo-media were made. This component of the talk was not included in the presentation brief that we approved for show.
We want to make it clear that DinoCon does not support the use of generative AI in any way. We’d like to thank the amazing array of artists and creators that joined us this year at DinoCon 2026 who we will continue to support in future.

Unsure if this is common knowledge or not, but the 'voice actor' for the Rhamphorhynchus in Walking With Dinosaurs were these guys. Razorbills. This one in the photo made that exact noise at a kittiwake that got too close.

This originated as an updated version of a scene from Walking With Dinosaurs in light of the new study surrounding Muttaburrasaurus. As time went on, however, it ended up heavily inspired by the sequence in Planet Earth where a desperate polar bear attacks a herd of walruses.

Riojasaurus is up next! This is a medium sized sauropodomorph, about 6m long - though I have found one mention in the literature of a possible 10m length. Thought to be quadrupedal in the past, work by @skeletaldrawing.bsky.social suggests a primarily bipedal animal. Size comparison below ⬇️
