Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 03/09/2026Tasty experimental archeology! I came across this medieval earthenware cookie mold, featuring an image of Mary being told by the angel Gabriel that she will give birth to Jesus. I made a replica of the cooky mold an then Noor baked a few cookies. Original mold: Kunstgewerbemuseum, 15th century 020
Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 28/08/2026A Roman oil lamp replica I'm working on. The original to the right was found by chance in Nijmegen. I sculpted a solid "master", around which I shaped the mould. With the mould I can make a series of lamps, just the way the Romans used to make them. #experimentalarcheology #romanpottery 020

Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 18/04/2026The owl was used for all kinds of symbolic reasons in art around 1600, but not all of these symbolic values are easy to connect to these cups. However, owl beakers were sometimes given away as prices for shooting competitions, likely because the owl was used as a decoy for catching other birds. 030
Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 18/04/2026Why an owl? Owls produce pellets that they throw up. Looks like vomiting... which humans do when drinking too much from an owl beaker. 120
Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 18/04/2026The owl beaker head and body (right) were made more than 400 years ago in the Netherlands. They are in the Boijmans van Beuningen museum. I made a replica (left). #archeology #pottery #history #majolica 2163
Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 15/04/2026Why a jug with a #bagpipe? In #medieval times the bagpipe was a symbol for debauchery: feasting, sexuality, drinking a lot. This jug is a replica of a jug that was made somewhere between 1475 and 1550. So it all makes sense. Right? . . . #bartmannjug #pottery #puntneuskruik 171
Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 12/04/2026Thanks. I have been playing with the idea of firing it in the woodkiln without glaze - then it would certainly get a warm blush... but maybe it's most beautiful in terracotta. 110

Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 05/01/2026Comparable facejugs are usually dated between 1470 and 1550. I wouldn't dare to date a piece more specifically without a finding context. I understand that the experts in the show have to know a lot about a huge range of items, so these remarks are not meant as critique. 020
Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 05/01/2026The production region of the "puntneuskruik" is Aken and Raeren. The jugs were often made with a pinched foot, but a flat base wasn't particularly uncommon. 000
Aebele Trijsburg @atelierable.bsky.social · 05/01/2026The historian in the show doubts that the jug was found in an Amsterdam canal. I would say it's not unlikely, since many comparable pieces have been found in Amsterdam (including the one I own myself). 010
