Tasty experimental archeology! I came across this medieval earthenware cookie mold, featuring an image of Mary being told by the angel Gabriel that she will give birth to Jesus. I made a replica of the cooky mold an then Noor baked a few cookies. Original mold: Kunstgewerbemuseum, 15th century

A Roman oil lamp replica I'm working on. The original to the right was found by chance in Nijmegen. I sculpted a solid "master", around which I shaped the mould. With the mould I can make a series of lamps, just the way the Romans used to make them. #experimentalarcheology #romanpottery

Why a jug with a #bagpipe? In #medieval times the bagpipe was a symbol for debauchery: feasting, sexuality, drinking a lot. This jug is a replica of a jug that was made somewhere between 1475 and 1550. So it all makes sense. Right? . . . #bartmannjug #pottery #puntneuskruik

Bottles for feeding kids have a long history! Here's a Roman and a medieval one, alongside the replicas that I made. The very round Roman bottle was found in NL (collection RMO, Leiden). The medieval jug is dated 1350-1400 (museum Boijmans van Beuningen). #archeology #history #babybottle #pottery

Westerwald stoneware can be found in 17th century paintings, like the cheerful drinker by Judith Leyster. The jug is from Museum Rotterdam. In the frieze the letters: "H" and "K" (initials of the mould maker?). The jug was made in the beginning of the 17th century.

Some people think air pockets in pottery are dangerous, but it's really moist💧. Water expands about 1700 times when it turns into steam... you can move a train with that! So, drying your pottery is important. And: firing GENTLY. . . . #pottery #pottenbakker #handmade #art #workinprogress #craft

Now back to the full body Bartmann jug that I started with. The one with the pewter lid is the original that was probably made between 1525-1550 in Cologne. It's now in the Victoria and Albert museum. Bartmann jugs came in many varieties but this one, with a body and hands, is quite unique.

Here's a typical 17th century Bartmann (replica again). It's angry and it has every reason: in the 17th century, the Bartmann jug is more and more considered a storage jar instead of a prestigious jug to put on the table.
Another bulbous brown glazed jug with narrow neck and narrow foot. The face on the neck is crude and angry. There's a rosette on the belly of the jug.

The Bartmann jug (from German "Bartmann" - bearded man) was especially popular in the 16th century. They came in many varieties, some with only a bearded face, some entirely covered in ornaments and texts. This very happy Bartman would have been common around 1600 (only this is a replica again).
A brown glazed jug with bulbous belly and a wide smile in his enormous beard.

Two brown glazed jugs besides each other. They look very similar but the right one has a pewter lid. The jugs have a chunky body that actually looks like a body of a man wearing 16th century attire with a little cape and a smock shirt appearing from under his slashed upper garment. He's got arms closely pressed against his body and he's holding a glass and a jug. He's got a small face with a full beard, mustache and curls.

I'm trying out marbling techniques. The two small bowls are finished, the tall bottle is still in progress. The 17th century original in the picture was made in northern Italy. Marbled wares like these used to be shipped far and wide. . . #pottery #handmade #pottenbakker #history #archeology #bowl

The bottle is standing on a messy worktable with all kinds of stuff lying around. A tall bottle like the one in the previous pictures, but this one is shiny and red-yellow. It's presented like a museum piece, which it is, on a white background. This bottle is part of the Victoria and Albert museum collection
