Het aantal eerstejaarsstudenten dat kiest voor ‘computer science’ – waar vele studies zoals kunstmatige intelligentie en informatica onder vallen – is sinds 2023 fors gedaald bij de Nederlandse universiteiten en hbo-opledingen. Reden lijkt de opkomst van AI te zijn en het idee onder schoolverlaters dat er geen brood zit in een toekomst als computerprogrammeur.

In plaats van zo snel mogelijk nieuwe functionaliteiten te produceren, zouden we ons moeten richten op _kwaliteit_, het leveren van _waarde_ aan gebruikers en op risicovermindering – helemaal wanneer je werkt met niet-deterministische uitkomsten zoals kenmerkend is voor LLM’s.

LLM’s zijn een _gereedschap_ en moeten als zodanig behandeld worden – maak er geen afhankelijkheid, verplichting of stoorzender van.

Het is belangrijk om de _negatieve impact_ van LLM’s op het milieu, gemeenschappen en individuen te _minimaliseren_.

When it comes to concrete, objective matters, artificial intelligence has already surpassed human reasoning. But in abstract matters, it is rather lacking; it can deal with pure logic, but it cannot reconcile the concrete and the abstract.
In fantastical scenarios, it is almost wholly incapable of putting together a good response, and can even spiral into a meltdown. The humanities need to assess what artificial intelligence _cannot_ do, now and in the future; these shortcomings reveal human ingenuity.

As this continues, and it masters inter-language translation, synthesizing from different documents, for example from handwritten ones, photos and
audio recordings, and parsing everyday situations… it can give lectures, it can write papers, it can displace the work of a historian. When a director wants to set a show in historical times, they’d typically bring on a few historians as consultants. But now they can skip the historians.

And with that established, I want to ask which of these layers AI handles best. In concrete matters, artificial intelligence surpasses humans; human memory can’t compete with its database of facts. In abstract matters, it is a bit lacking;
although it has a firm grasp of logic, its grasp on the relationship between the real and imagined is shaky. In the realm of the fantastical, AI is almost incapable of giving a coherent answer, and easily devolves into nonsense. The humanities can challenge artificial intelligence by identifying what AI cannot do now or in the future, and
focus on the human creativity of these domains.
