Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 03/05/2026One of my favourite times of the year, EGU! If would like to hear more about coupled observations of changes in seismic spectra and velocity changes at multiple volcanoes, don't hesitate to pass by Room 0.96/97 on Wednesday 6 May, at 17:40–17:50 😉. 040
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 25/04/2026Visited the Capelinhos volcano on Faial island, site of the 1957-58 eruption. The land visible to the right of the lighthouse (left side of photo) was entirely built during this eruptive episode, which began as submarine volcanism. Truly fascinating to see. 050
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 22/04/2026Fieldwork finished so a bit of volcanic island tourism over the next days. Photo is view of Sao Miguel. 040
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 15/04/2026Weather kind so far, also joined by curious companions. Second day of servicing broadband seismometers with colleagues at Gutenberg University Mainz and IVAR research institute here in the Azores (with soil moisture sensors installed also). 020
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 14/04/2026Landed in São Miguel, Azores, to begin fieldwork installing soil moisture sensors on Fogo volcano. 030
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 11/02/2026In Potsdam for a couple weeks, visiting GFZ to work on a Geo-INQUIRE project analyzing DAS recordings from Mt Etna. Exciting things to come for sure! 030
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 05/02/2026The observation that frequencies appear to respond to velocity changes in proximity to the recording station (using single-station interferometry) highlights need to better clarify the role of source, path, and site effects in the recorded seismic wavefield (with peaks varied across stations). (4/5) 100
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 05/02/2026Key to this is that frequency changes do not appear related to any change in the tremor source process, rather are correlated with both seasonal processes (winter velocity high on edifice) and decreases following local earthquakes (with a linear relationship between df/f and PGV). (3/5) 110
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 05/02/2026In this work we find evidence that the frequencies of stable spectral lines during broadband tremor at Mt Etna are evolving in response to velocity changes in the medium, such that df/f (frequency changes) is approximately equal to dv/v (velocity changes). (2/5) 100
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 27/12/2025Little bit different from my usual work. Putting some nodes out at a site of a recent archaelogical dig in St Lawrence, Jersey. Aim is to apply HVSR towards detecting a layer boundary related to prior human compaction. Lets see! 020
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 23/12/2025Taking a few extra friends back to Jersey for Christmas this year 🎄 (four smart solo seismic nodes) 030
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 06/12/2025Piton de la fournaise volcano in the flesh. Had planned to hike to the summit but not to be with the elevated alert since this morning! 040
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 05/12/2025Arrived on La Réunion for a short stay. Realizing how big it really is when i compare it to my island of birth... 😄 020
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Didn't quite understand what I was getting when I ordered the Vulcano pizza 😅. Think I've hit my pizza dough quota for awhile 010
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 07/10/2025Fieldwork finished, was a good one! Now we patiently wait to see if the boats will resume; Aeolien islands living up to their name. 060
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 06/10/2025Just about finishing up on Panarea island, over two hundred short-term nodal deployments towards mapping hydrothermal alteration, with @jonaspaetzel.bsky.social and Adrian Thorn. 011
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 05/10/2025Having Stromboli as an 'office' view for the past few days has been quite something! A couple more days of fieldwork planned, then a cheeky trip to the volcano for a bit of tourism ;) 150
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 02/10/2025Definitely a bunch of fieldwork left unshared during the past year, but this can change ;) Currently undertaking fieldwork in Panarea, Italy, with scientists from Brussels, Ghent, and Namur, to map zones of hydrothermal alteration. Worse places to be in October 😎. 040
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 03/02/2024Flying in for a 2 week visit to University of Helsinki 👌 030
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 10/01/2024another similar msg suggesting email will be sufficient to confirm submission still possible (assuming their servers are loaded right now). 010
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 10/01/2024fyi, lots of people experiencing issues with waiting room infinite loop (myself included). On Twitter (X), they are saying to email them with User ID and Session to ensure you can submit (i am assuming this will be after the deadline now, but email acting as proof of intention). Example below. 211
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 29/11/2023On the same day that i graduated from my first degree eleven years ago, i defended my PhD 🙂. Thanks to FB for letting me know of that little coincidence. And thanks to this great team 👌👌 (sorry Co, there isnt one photo where at least one of us isnt looking the wrong way 😅). On to 🇧🇪 for a Post-doc. 280
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 12/11/2023Haven't seen this posted on here yet, but saw this in a twitter post (map.is), a nice free tool that can be used to view recent IMO earthquake locations. Here's the activity in the last 6 hours (for example). Just bringing it here as I'm trying to avoid using twitter (X) if i can! 2197
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 12/10/2023First Bourget-du-Lac photo on bluesky 😎. Perhaps a few weeks more of reasonable swimming temperatures (depending who you ask 😄). 030
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 04/10/2023PhD is in 😎. To celebrate, here's a first look at some data from the thesis. Plot shows my approximate working hours through the month of September 😅 (from a focus app Forest). Definitely time to rediscover a normal life. 230
