Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 03/05/2026One of my favourite times of the year, EGU! If would like to hear more about coupled observations of changes in seismic spectra and velocity changes at multiple volcanoes, don't hesitate to pass by Room 0.96/97 on Wednesday 6 May, at 17:40–17:50 😉. 040
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 25/04/2026Visited the Capelinhos volcano on Faial island, site of the 1957-58 eruption. The land visible to the right of the lighthouse (left side of photo) was entirely built during this eruptive episode, which began as submarine volcanism. Truly fascinating to see. 050
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 22/04/2026Fieldwork finished so a bit of volcanic island tourism over the next days. Photo is view of Sao Miguel. 040
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 15/04/2026Weather kind so far, also joined by curious companions. Second day of servicing broadband seismometers with colleagues at Gutenberg University Mainz and IVAR research institute here in the Azores (with soil moisture sensors installed also). 020
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 14/04/2026Landed in São Miguel, Azores, to begin fieldwork installing soil moisture sensors on Fogo volcano. 030
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 11/02/2026In Potsdam for a couple weeks, visiting GFZ to work on a Geo-INQUIRE project analyzing DAS recordings from Mt Etna. Exciting things to come for sure! 030

Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 21/01/2026I do miss that feeling of "wow, this is really well written" when reading student work. (as I review another masters thesis with lit review clearly written by chatgpt, this time with the wrong reference titles to back that up). 020
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 27/12/2025Little bit different from my usual work. Putting some nodes out at a site of a recent archaelogical dig in St Lawrence, Jersey. Aim is to apply HVSR towards detecting a layer boundary related to prior human compaction. Lets see! 020

Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 06/12/2025Piton de la fournaise volcano in the flesh. Had planned to hike to the summit but not to be with the elevated alert since this morning! 040

Strong winds generated by hurricanes create ocean waves and pressure fluctuations that cause stronger up and down movements in the water column, which seismometers record. 22815

Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 06/10/2025Just about finishing up on Panarea island, over two hundred short-term nodal deployments towards mapping hydrothermal alteration, with @jonaspaetzel.bsky.social and Adrian Thorn. 011
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 05/10/2025Having Stromboli as an 'office' view for the past few days has been quite something! A couple more days of fieldwork planned, then a cheeky trip to the volcano for a bit of tourism ;) 150
Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 02/10/2025Definitely a bunch of fieldwork left unshared during the past year, but this can change ;) Currently undertaking fieldwork in Panarea, Italy, with scientists from Brussels, Ghent, and Namur, to map zones of hydrothermal alteration. Worse places to be in October 😎. 040

Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 13/11/2023Funny little coincidence. Said today I would make scones for the lab; would be the first time since my last ones were sent flying by the Kaikoura earthquake (having been left out on a tray). Just realised it was the 7-year anniversary today of the EQ ^^. Stars are aligned to remake these scones. 020

Alec Yates @asyates2.bsky.social · 09/10/2023Interesting read. Its hard to imagine the difficulty having to make a call to evacuate following unrest at a supervolcano, where precursory activity may likely be sustained for many months to years. So many unknowns. 221
