Ah yeah. It seems to depend on which device is connected to which network. Probably a side effect of all the LLM scrapers…

Missing the absolute coolest aspect of this system: we see the fast spinning “Pulsar A” get *eclipsed* by the magnetic field of “Pulsar B”!
Four graphs showing the polarised light curve of the fast spinning Pulsar A of the Double Pulsar getting eclipsed by a secondary companion Pulsar B.

The eclipses show lots of peaks and troughs as radio waves from Pulsar A either get absorbed or sneak past the magnetic field of Pulsar B.

We’re currently collecting an extra 2 million seconds of data with IXPE to both confirm the vacuum birefringence result and study it in even greater detail. Also to look for something called the vacuum resonance — another bizzare interaction between photons and virtual particles!

The misalignment of the magnetic and rotational axes doesn’t determine whether a neutron star is an MSP or not. That’s more to do with whether they have/had a binary companion to accrete material from. And how long they accreted material for.

Damn. There really isn’t any replacement for Swift’s magnetar monitoring capabilities. Especially since NICER is also dead

In principle the same should happen to visible light emitted from the magnetar. But it’s both much harder to detect and the effect will be weaker.

Marcus Lower @astromelow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
It’s a little more complicated than that. The magnetic field causes virtual particles that briefly pop in-and-out of existence due to quantum vacuum fluctuations to become polarised. These particles then interact with X-rays, causing the X-ray polarisation to become aligned with the magnetic field.

Can empty space alter the behaviour of light? Turns out the answer is seemingly yes, if you have a magnetar on hand! Using NASA’s IXPE and NICER telescopes + the CSIRO’s Murriyang radio telescope, we may have finally detected this effect 🔭 🧪 ☄️ Publication in Nature: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
On the left is a magnetar, a sphere surrounded by donut shaped threads of a powerful magnetic field. Beams of radio waves blast out from the magnetic poles, shown as red jets of light. On the surface of the magnetar is a bright hot spot. A zoom-in on the hotspot illustrates X-rays (wiggly lines) becoming increasingly polarised as they interact with pairs of virtual particles that pop in out of existence (blue and red dots linked by arrows to small pops).

NASA alt text: Earthset captured through the Orion spacecraft window at 6:41 p.m. EDT, April 6, 2026, during the Artemis II crew’s flyby of the Moon. A muted blue Earth with bright white clouds sets behind the cratered lunar surface. The dark portion of Earth is experiencing nighttime. On Earth’s day side, swirling clouds are visible over the Australia and Oceania region. In the foreground, Ohm crater has terraced edges and a flat floor interrupted by central peaks. Central peaks form in complex craters when the lunar surface, liquefied on impact, splashes upwards during the crater’s formation.
