Layoffs should be humiliating for leadership. The geniuses at the top, with their big fat salaries, couldn’t budget and strategize to good enough to keep the only thing that matters about a company: its people. I truly wonder if Ziff Davis leadership is embarrassed. Somehow, I doubt it.

We are tired of posting statements like these.

Today was an awful day at IGN. We were blindsided by the layoff of four union members and many more people across the organization who contributed years of their careers to making IGN an unparalleled voice in games and entertainment.

With each successive layoff, core parts of IGN’s operation continue to be stripped away. Today, IGN has decided to do away with many of our talented producers, editors, hosts, and other crucial roles, both within and out of the union. How many layoffs will occur before we no longer recognize the company we work for and the content that we make?

While we recognize the challenges the media industry is facing as a whole, it is difficult to understand how laying off valuable employees better positions us to meet those challenges. In turn, remaining employees bear additional workloads worsened by anxiety over the ever-looming threat of another layoff.

We are devastated, angry, and heartbroken for our colleagues.

The other student then resumed and passed her test and then I passed mine. The last thing Mr. Walker said to me, without a single hint of irony or jest, was “hey, just watch the speed, okay?” My jaw dropped, indignant, as he drove away. I wonder how that odd man is doing.

Still in the car, I explained the situation to Mr. Walker. Another student was taking her test and I was waiting in the backseat. He looked back and said, “get in the drivers seat. And gun it to the DMV.” I probably went at least 20 mph over the speed limit, but we got to the DMV in time.

I had my driver’s ed course with my best friend. She took her final test first, passed, and went directly to the DMV for her license. When she got there, she realized Mr. Walker forgot to sign her test. The DMV closed in an hour and then would be closed for the weekend. She was devastated.

Mr. Walker would usually fall asleep if you had him for an earlier slot. He always made everyone stop at 7/11 so he could get a Milky Way. One summer, there was a rumor that he died. When he walked through the high school the first day of the year, everyone thought they saw a ghost. He was unfazed.
