As for Black characters, we lost a lot when Walter Dean Myers passed. And a lot are about social justice, when my students just want a regular kid who looks like them. Might be too old for them, but WASHINGTON BLACK is good and CHAINS cannot put down (great trilogy)

I wonder how much that is a display problem because our school's shelves have tons of black kids on the cover (liberal, mostly white Vermont). I SURVIVED for younger readers, Alan Gatz for older. But SFF is great. Beast Quest, Warrior cats, Potter, Jackson, Maze Runner...
