I worked on product development engineering projects for 30+ years. You need to do root cause analysis to solve problems thoroughly. Under Mayor Gainey, Pittsburgh has been doing that. One pilot project to improve worker safety also saved $10M! pittsburghquarterly.com/articles/see...
Worker Safety – The goal is zero harm for city workers. In just two years the worker harm rates have gone down by a staggering 59 percent in the pilot department (DPW) and 31 percent across the entire City workforce. This means roughly 100 fewer City workers are being hurt each year, respecting their humanity, leaving more people to perform vital city services, and saving pain and cost for all. Money is not the object, but driving safety also saved the City almost $10 million over two years in paid claims, resources that can be used to better meet resident needs.People, as they often do, jumped to expensive solutions instead of solving the problem. “If we bought a more powerful truck we could have powered through the skid.” But leaders trained in root cause problem solving instead led the hard work of solving the real problem. “WHY, on this patch of road, on this day, was it so icy our truck skidded off the road?” They went with their workers to the site and discovered the road was covered in ice because water was pooling there. Water was pooling because a culvert under the road was blocked. The culvert was blocked because it was overgrown by vegetation. And it was overgrown by vegetation because there was no standard work for preventively clearing drainage culverts.

Within hours this culvert was cleared, eliminating risk not only for City trucks, but for all drivers who use this road. Within days teams found everywhere else in the city where these conditions existed. And within weeks, standards were created to preventively clear culverts, so this root cause would not hurt to anyone in the City again.

In Pittsburgh, the Democratic primary is the "real" election. If you vote by mail, your ballot is coming soon! The primary is 5/20. We're flooded with unpleasant mailers, mainly by PACs supporting Corey O'Connor. They're using racist tropes & telling weirdly easily disproved lies. 1/5
On the left, a mailer that claims the mayor isn't getting blight demolitions done. It has a photo of two houses, and one of them is a wreck. On the right is a more recent photo of the same place. The blighted house is gone, and was demolished in 2023.

CommUnity Good Morning 🌞 Thank you to everyone who packed Hazelwood Brew House last night to support my re-election! This race is about whether our government serves the people or the powerful — I always choose the people. But our work to build a city for all isn't finished.

This is what being principled Mayor looks like. We need a mayor who stands up for EVERY student and their right to be safe and freely express themselves without fear of visa revocation and ICE detention. Thank you, @gaineyformayor.com

I was really frustrated by Pittsburgh's URA in the past -- the landbank didn't produce any new housing for anyone! Since Mayor Gainey was elected, we've seen a lot of movement from the URA, in addition to the Mayor's other work on affordable housing.

Doing work to advocate for mamas, especially Black mamas, has been one that means so much to me. I’m truly honored to receive this award from the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus🥹 I always say this work isn’t about the awards, it’s about SAVING THE LIVES of our mamas and babies.

O'Connor's campaign fundraised with Walnut Capital, bringing in over $90,000, but Gainey's campaign accepted thousands from area construction firms.

If Corey understood his old council district, the mayor’s zoning legislation, or even the existing zoning code, he would know that Greenfield and Lincoln Place are almost entirely R1 and R2, so wouldn't be impacted by IZ hardly any, if at all. www.publicsource.org/pittsburgh-m...
O’Connor said he voted for inclusionary zoning to apply to Lawrenceville when he was a council member. “But Lawrenceville’s market is different than Lincoln Place’s market, and West End’s market is different than Greenfield’s market.”

In today’s political climate meeting with folks like this should be a HARD NO. Our elected officials are supposed to serve the people, and these guys are not for the people. There is NO EXCUSE.

Pgh! I’m joining PPS Board Director, Devon Taliaferro, for a fundraiser for @gaineyformayor.com! There’s a choice in how Pgh will navigate in this political climate. I need a leader fighting & working to Keep Pittsburgh Home for the many, not the few. Don’t let the tropes & propaganda fool you!
