If wandering is quicker than death
What is there to fear?

You have two hands and two feet
You are not lonely.

Beautiful bodies are folded around their love
With the folding skill and wisdom of nursery schools.

A man passes through the wall
And the wall remains whole and he remains whole.

Such a man you are
Or you will become one.

the tissue of this scarred question
is not an issue these odd glitches
of meteorological plane of reality
lemons are almost ripe beside the porch
of my building; scared numbness and sour taste
of what to do next and how to proceed to
pass the oblivion and all the syrupy stickiness
of inevitable mundane

A passage from a recent theatrical review from Moscow:

Before the curtain rose, [actor and director] Vladimir Mashkov’s voice issued a warning:

“This performance presents British values that are alien to us. Please note that some of them are punishable under the laws of the Russian Federation. We wish you an unforgettable evening.”

One of my favourite stories about the literary life in Russia twenty years ago. And about the weight the literati had in people's consciousness (not anymore). The original Russian post (with more stories about “the tour”): un-tal-lukas.livejournal.com/1373089.html #booksky #wrtiers #poets #history
Near Moskovsky Train Station [in Nizhny Novgorod] we fell into the clutches of a police patrol. [poet Evgeny] Lesin, staggering with a bottle in his hand, for some reason rubbed them the wrong way.

“Let’s see your papers,” the chief thug said with an ugly grin.

“You’re an asshole, a piece of shit, and a bitch,” Lesin replied, as usual [, quoting a well-known Russian explicit poem about the toughness of poet's life].

“Well, well,” the chief thug smiled even more coldly as he examined our passports. “Moscow and Petersburg, is it? And what’s the purpose of your visit?”

“On tour!” I blurted out.

“Oh, is that so!” the man brightened up completely. “And who exactly are you, then?”

“He’s a poet, and I’m — his manager,” my subconscious answered for me.

The faces of our tormentors fell and grew bored. The passports were handed back, the tickets too, and they stopped beating Lesin over the head with a truncheon.

“Sorry for the trouble,” the chief thug snapped a salute. “Do come again!”

I finally dropped a stack of books on the local bookcrossing shelf, a year later than anticipated. I came back with a small hardcover book, The Nature of Poetry (1946). The basic framework proposed in this book remains relevant today, albeit with some marginal caveats. 01/02 #booksky #poetry

I'm keeping reading Shklovsky. This paragraph is not that funny for a non-Russian ear, but it reminded me of two great anecdotes I want to share. (01/04) #booksky #prose #literature #russian #poets #anecdotes
«Once they called me and asked to go to the <army> volunteer <Osip> Brik.

There was such a comrade in our squad. Everybody knew him: on his test drive, he crushed three cars at once».

VIKTOR SHKLOVSKY. THIRD FACTORY

Brick was, let's say, part of the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky's extended family, a famous person in his own right and Shklovsky's mate. This story reminded me of a couple of literary anecdotes in the same vein.

Yesterday, I was reading Shklovsky and stumbled upon this unexpectedly chilling short text. I translated it for you (although I just googled that the book itself *is* available in English, if you decide to read it). #booksky #translation #literature #prose #russian #pennydreafuls
THE RED ELEPHANT

The red elephant, my son's toy, you'll be the first invited into my book, so all the other wouldn't be vain.

The red elephant squeaks and whines. All the rubber toys should be squeaking, otherwise why would the air came out them&

So, despite the writings of [Alfred] Brehm, the red elephant squeaks and whines. And I'm writing in my nest high above Arbat street.

A rare bird would reach me without losing its breath. My nest braked my habit of long breaths.

My son is laughing.

He laughed when he saw the horse for the first time. He thought that it made itself four legs and a long face as a joke.

We all manufactured in different shapes, but we all have the same voice, if we're squeezed.

— Move aside, red elephant. I want to see the life without a jest and to tell it something with my voice through the squeaker.

This is the end of a feuilleton.

THIRD CANDLE
as
we
were
trying
to hold
on

were
we
alive

grasping

pitiful
memory of self
it's pitfalls

moist golden dirt
as the desert winter
reigns and everything's

blooming

and the electric candle
of the recollection is dimming

as the distant scream
touches you

in a flicker
