I used to be in a particular fgc discord channel and by the time I left the new admin had instituted an unofficial policy of "don't speak negatively on a game if it has any community playing it". I can't deal with that. Not everything is good and I can not pretend I think it is.

I think the 2003 adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist is interesting. I ultimately prefer the manga and brotherhood because so many of my favorite characters don't make it into '03, but they made their own thing out of it and I definitely prefer that approach to countless filler episodes

My hill to die on is that the manga is the best version of Dragonball / DBZ. The pacing is better and there's a lot of things about the art style in the fights that doesn't fully transfer over to the animation

Hmmmm. I love Cave Story but I don't think it's one of these. Pretty linear all told. Super Metroid only clicked for me bizarrely once I played it on a SNES controller. It feels really awkward on a modern dualshock or xbox style controller imo

It's hard to really feel the parts that are samey and repetitive in Morrowind when the game makes you so scared to go into a dungeon and get murdered by who knows what supernatural and/or steampunk monstrosity The dungeons in oblivion and Skyrim feel like a checklist you're ticking off

BG1 is mostly a game about adventuring in the woods and does require a lot of pre-existing knowledge of old D&D mechanics, and the pseudo real-time combat makes it really hard to understand and perform strategy in combat. BG3 is not anywhere near as rough to get into imo

Dark Souls 1 is challenging yes but it's also got a great mood and world building and characters that I love. Later games (3 and elden ring) lean way harder into the difficulty reputation the games have gotten, and I like them significantly less even though they are more "polished"

I like to compare Elden Ring with playing Tekken. Tekken is full of feints and knowledge checks, but because you're playing against a human you can learn their patterns and read their moves. Some Elden Ring bosses feel like playing Tekken against a random number generator

I'm still mad that Dragon Age: Origin has a built in achievement system in the game so even if you didn't get it on a platform that has achievements it would still pop them up in the middle of dramatic scenes
