For my taste, there's no better writing in the Star Wars universe than Luthen's monologue in Season 1, episode 10. Absolutely top tier Star Wars.
Andor's Luthen Rael, played by Stellan Skarsgård, delivering the greatest monologue in all the Star Wars universe. [A still from that scene in Season 1, Episode 10, with the text of his speech overlaid.]

Calm. Kindness. Kinship. Love.
I’ve given up all chance at inner peace.
I’ve made my mind a sunless space.
I share my dreams with ghosts.
I wake up every day to an equation
I wrote 15 years ago from which
there’s only one conclusion:
I’m damned for what I do.

My anger, my ego, my unwillingness
to yield, my eagerness to fight,
they’ve set me on a path from which
there is no escape. I yearned to be
a savior against injustice without
contemplating the cost and by the time
I looked down there was no longer
any ground beneath my feet.

What is my sacrifice?

I’m condemned to use the tools
of my enemy to defeat them.
I burn my decency for someone else’s future.
I burn my life to make a sunrise
that I know I’ll never see.

And the ego that started this fight
will never have a mirror or an audience
or the light of gratitude.

So what do I sacrifice?

Everything!

Bloomberg: tech billionaires account for all of the $845B in wealth gains so far in 2026; those whose fortunes came from outside tech lost $62B total. The rest of the country is getting fucked over by Big Tech.

I recently recommended people who don't like the colorful gradients in the new Firefox theme use the old "Proton" theme. I've since reverted that change myself and instead set the new "Ash" theme as my default. The gradient is subtle enough, and without the saturated colors it's pretty nice.
My Firefox (content obscured) with Ash theme, sidebar tabs, and customized toolbar.Theme selection panel in Firefox Settings. There is an expand control at the bottom of the list I'd not seen before, behind which were hiding a couple low-saturation colors. The theme list is two side and 6 tall, each one featuring a stylized Firefox toolbars demonstrating the color scheme. Above the list is the same sort of panel featuring the Ash theme I've enabled.

That's part of it for sure. The behavior is better with the block cursor, though it still gets stuck out of line--and without a cursor so you see only the indicators. Assigned to backlog, no immediate plans to fix :( Awfully casual burying. Fuck disabled people, I guess.

I entered college smoking Camels and exited on Lucky Strikes--too many friends bumming too many smokes while I was too broke and too generous to say no. So I switched my fix to the cheap stuff no one wanted: Luckies (which actually tasted better). When that later failed, I moved to rolling my own.

Don't be put off by the massive size I've set. I maxed out the barbells but you don't have to. You can also choose a better color if you like, and don't miss the few other cursor settings available in the same window.

This is the Windows Text Cursor Indicator. [cursor and indicator barbells]

It makes locating and tracking the cursor easier for people with low vision. But like almost every accessibility feature ever built, it's valuable to non-disabled users like me, too.

Microsoft's Visual Studio Code doesn't support it. 😫

Blast from the past, Nov 2000, six months after I joined Netscape and staff@mozilla.org. I signed it but the code was certainly not ready. Over the next 18 months, drivers@mozilla.org whipped things into shape enough that we could feel good bestowing Mozilla with the precious "1.0" version number.

The poster reads:

I'm doing a course of high-dose prednisone for a pulmonary sarcoidosis flare. This time around, the prednisone's lifted my blood sugar baseline by about 100 points. So I don't get to eat carbs until the prednisone tapers. This sucks more than anything that's ever sucked in the history of sucking.

uBlock Origin can hide those sleezy "upgrade to our AI" buttons and banners. All you have to do is click the uBO icon, click the eyedropper, and then select the element you want to hide. You'll get a chance to "Preview" the change, then press the "Pick" button to hide that element. Easy peasy :D
four screenshots in one image.

Top left is the uBO main pop-up with a mouse pointer over the eyedropper icon at the bottom of the panel. Bottom left is a shot of the Google Gemini icon highlighted with red indicating focus. The right stacked images are the uBO filters panels that let you adjust the boundaries of the element you want to hide. The top image has the mouse pointer on "Preview" and the bottom has the pointer on "Pick." The panels are numbered 1-4 in the order described.

I am concerned about this limb. Most of these are redwoods, but this one's a Doug fir. In the 1990s, for reasons unknown, the previous owners topped this sturdy tree at 150', and this branch swelled. It *might* reach our house with enough wind ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The neighborhood lumberjack has retired :-(
typical tourist-y skyward shot up through tall though not mighty redwoods, where you have a nice sort of circle of blue sky with wisps of white clouds in the middle of the picture and that's encircled by green feather adorn black spears jabbing and pointing inward and upward, stabbing at the blue oculus if in defiance, "You have no power here, mighty golden disk. Your fire will not avail you. We have authority over these lands. You are forth with banished from this kingdom!"

I gave ChatGPT a simple construction project: mount a brace and a face plate across three rafters to secure a telescoping mast for a small radio. I provided goals, materials, and dimensions, and asked it for some drawings. The drawings are the most cursed thing I've ever seen. Here's one example.
Hard to describe. It's a detailed illustration with labels and arrows but every single piece of lumber and every bracket and fastener are just wrong--misshapen, wrong dimensions, wrong type, wrong in every way.

[Upleveled from an earlier thread] This is my hugging tree. It lives about 10 paces from our front door. When I need to clear my head or fill it with something better, communing with this magnificent coast redwood always seems to do the trick. Also, how about that amazing bark?

This big fella's a Douglas fir (we live in a redwood-dominant, mixed-conifer forest). It carries large black scars from a fire in the 1950s. Redwoods, with their thick, fibrous bark, are the ones known for fire resistance, but for this tree, size alone seems to have been enough. 5' DBH, 220' tall

Without buying a tilt-shift or ultra-wide for my D70, most of our trees are just too big and tall to photograph up close. I measured this one a few years ago at seven feet diameter, and my latest drone measurement says it's 260 feet tall. Maybe I'll buy that lens. Anyone got recommendations?

A basket of goods costs a 1/3rd more today than 10 years ago. My take: The '70s saw a doubling of prices. The 80s was a 3/4ths increase. The low rate in the '10s was anomalous. We've returned to '90s levels, still far from '70s and '80s increases. It doesn't feel good, but it's a fact of life.
