I get this. I’ve never had gender dysphoria but when I was a kid I was tall and skinny. Then puberty set in and I got stout and hairy. This was the 90s when everything was heroin chic and pretty, hairless boys. I was self conscious about until I hit my mid-thirties and blossomed into Daddy.

This is it, but I’d add a charitable footnote: I think that a lot of men who don’t have much experience being friends with women probably subconsciously revert to these terms to signal friendly intent. Their only frame of reference is to treat women friends like “one of the guys”

It’s really hard to describe how different Twitter was in the first few years compared to what it became. There was a real sense of community. Meeting people who were local to you wasn’t a big deal at all.
