Nice work! 😍 Is this going to be the default ggsql renderer and replace vega lite?

Pretty spot on! I chuckled with the part about people not reading error messages. They don't read anything! And it seems more obvious with LLMs reading everything in seconds. I still prefer messy CSVs though. It feels strange not existing an "unzipped" parquet that's readable/diffable.

Do you love maps? Of course you do! With the latest release of #ggsql we now support spatial plotting directly from your database. As a cherry on top, the release also provides powerful in-layer aggregation. Read all about it on the blog

Indeed! Controlling zooming, hover states, etc. and how to create a nice API for all that... Seems a fun yet challenging task

Can't wait to try it out!

Oho that's great news! Will it be interactive? Is it built on top of some existing charting library? I don't envy the task, but can't wait to see the result

Artur Carvalho @artur.carva.lu · 21/05/2026
Thank you for the feedback! I'll try to worry about API changes later 😅 Do you guys have any plans to replace/improve the writer soon? Atm it limits even more than the WASM errors. Although the errors are irrecoverable, I work around it by storing configs on the URL, and the CSV on indexDB

Hey @thomasp85.com @teunbrand.bsky.social, I created a chart builder built on top of #ggsql: plotr.org. Sort of the ggsql Esquisse version :) Would love to hear what you think! It's still very much experimental though.

I think about this comic all the time.
Comic by drawer of drawings on Instagram. A detective stands in a kitchen that looks like it's splattered with blood. The detective says, mother of god. Nothing human could have done this. In the bottom panel it says, earlier. And there is a dog uneasily holding a ketchup bottle with its paws trying to put ketchup on a hamburger.

Indeed, these design traits seem subtle but the impact is incredible. Sometimes I use Esquisse to understand how a chart works and many times I get an informative chart even half way building it. And I'm feeling the same with ggsql playground.

I guess what's unexpected is not having a mandatory aesthetic fill. I talked with several people and they thought the same. Some assumed if the default of fill would be the count of the grouped x and y. Not sure if this is how it works in the majority of charting libraries but it's a nice detail

Hey @thomasp85.com @hadley.nz why do we see black rectangles on heatmaps when we select only x and y? What was the motivation behind it? I was talking with colleagues and we all agreed this is such a nice feature to quickly know if there's an intersection even before selecting the 3rd variable

I use a Claude skill I named "/code-review". Maybe because it doesn't share the context and it has different directive, it catches a lot of stuff. Never tried a complementary LLM though. Might be worth it if the free plans are enough

Interesting. I have a hard time to draw the line between the aesthetically pleasing and functional. I wonder if some people find something aesthetically pleasing because they saw it many times in publications and people create a positive association with some fonts, colors, etc.

These look really nice! Why did you decide going with these ones? I've read about color schemes, but I can't get a good answer which ones work better from a functional perspective. I was told Color Brewer are older research, but I don't know what is new research.

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs) Good tech. Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales) Bad tech.

Wow! The slowly showing all the map information; then line charts with the x and y tooltips connected to the axes so we can compare the hovered value to values in the axis; and subplots with a toggle to make it easy to compare subplots, or make it easy to compare plot lines... Just incredible!

This is really nice! I think I just found a way to get the current stat for the first layer. Not sure if this is too convoluted, but at least I can get to the plot settings.

Extremely upset that a throw-away XKCD joke somehow became the organizing principle for the Internet.
