It's a before and after after in automotive history, someone told me. Before, cars that go on the street. After, cars that leave craters on the street. I don't think that's what they meant, but I don't see what else it could be.

I am reasonably certain that I'm the first person to quote Final Destination (2000) in serious scholarly research about Thucydides.

A new story by yours truly in the fantastic Sci Phi Journal. This one requires you to take out pen and paper and fight for your sanity using trigonometry. That's the stuff thrillers are made of, you know. www.sciphijournal.org/index.php/20...

I remember hearing something about someone having some biolabs somewhere, about four years ago... Now, where was that...? Oh, right—

It all started on this day. Thank you for a wonderful twenty years.
Text in the center reads: 20 Years Oct. 2006 - Oct. 2026, clarkesworldmagazine.com

(right) Cover art for issue 241 by Marcel Deneuve is "Labyrinths of Azarax" and features a blue and white mechanical eye in a circular opening looking at a small, white, glowing humanoid figure standing on a large pipe in the tunnel. Many pipes line the walls, all heading out to the main room. Pipes are yellow and gray. Room beyond is blue.

(left) Cover art for issue 1 by Tomasz Pietrzyk is "The Town of the Towers" and features a surreal town of yellowy white distorted towers with reddish orange roofs that overhang the towers and rise to a point. Mishapen dark windows and doors are scattered about on the buildings. Orange sky gives the entire piece a warm tone.

The Russian attack. Though I must admit, when I made the comment I thought this was about Leipzig. Not much of a statement to say attacks on Ukrainian soil are acts of war, 4 years into the war. Anyway, point is, EU should treat attacks as what they are.

Back in my day, this would have been considered an act of war. I am unsure as to when it stopped being "my day", since I don't understand how you could call it anything else, but clearly I must be out of touch with reality.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

It did tingle my "possibly fake" senses, good that you checked. The fact that you can see Jupiter's color bands is just too much... Amazing picture

This post really disconcerted me for a second. I sometimes have trouble remembering that Mary Robinette Elsie's human AND a writer.

Oh, you mean you haven't gotten into a rabbit hole about historical contingency and necessity, and how it's different from metaphysical determinism, and whether the idea of fortune shouldn't have been abandoned, and what about Greek tyche? You're missing out.

If you ask me, we need better critics, and more severe ones, too. The art of literary criticism has been reduced to back-cover blurbs and tiktoks. I feel like there needs to be a layer of defense between myself and bad books. Also, tastemakers. I think tastemakers are a good thing.

I'm old school: I will absolutely tear a book apart in a review. Then again, the people who read my reviews are two or three randos on GR and my cat.

Oh, 'don't worry', they say, 'LLMs may produce a lot of slop & cause tremendous harm but in the hands of a brilliant genius like me they work really well. Other people might be creating garbage, but my LLM output is great, because I'm special. Everyone should use LLMs so that I don't feel judged.'

I always find it funny when people say "this era will be judged harshly in history books". Like, if we've learned anything from recent world events, it's that nobody reads history books.

Yeah, it's my main cause of frustration with PDX games. Strategy games in general just tend to be about snowballing, and that's only fun at the beginning.

In the process, wealth gets destroyed as dry grass burning, and not just in the region where the conflict takes place, as iran shoes.

I get the impression that today every conflict is a frozen conflict. Not even superpowers can deal with asymmetric insurgencies effectively , and in an asymmetric conflict one side fights really cheaply, the other very expensively.

ZELENSKYY: We attack military targets in Russia, or their energy, which they sell to fund war. Russians deliberately target civilian objects: museums, schools, apartments. They destroyed this Chornobyl museum that we built for 40th anniversary just one month ago. Crazy assholes.

I switched to a search engine which allows de-activating chatbot-produced results or summaries. Switched from Crome while I was at it, because it insisted in auto-translating pages and I could not turn it off.

Calling the "authors" of such stuff liars and shaming them in public seems to me the only thing to do. I hate cancel culture as much as anyone, but no one deserves a career in knowledge-seeking who makes up knowledge.

Years ago I dreamed I was watching a movie — legal drama: Batman was on trial for being a vigilante. Prosecution was Al Pacino, Defense was Matthew McConaughey, Judge was Morgan Freeman. Don't remember who Bruce Wayne was. Still one of my top 5 dreams. And it would make for a great movie irl !!!

I know Laöcoon isn't actually in the Iliad, but I'm having trouble thinking of any actual creatures that made an appearance in the Iliad?

Arturo Sierra @artsierra.bsky.social · 20/12/2025
Reading Homer, I was more impressed by there being lions in Greece than by any number of fantastic creatures. I mean, if Laöcoon's kids get dragged away by sea tentacles, I'm more astonished by the fact that he fought like a lion, from which it follows there were once lions in Europe. What?!

I know not everyone is down for free trade and open immigration, but separate from the particulars, it's both sad and scary to me that every day Earth's countries seem to be closing the doors. There's plenty to complain about with the post-WWII order, but also so many good things taken for granted.
