This is a fanciful scene of a small cat looking up at tall, weathered, vine-covered statues of his ancient ancestors in a winding, dark alley of overgrown trees and hedges. It is an atmospheric, mysterious, yet whimsical scene.

The idea for this piece came when, on one of my walks, I spied a cat sitting in a garden, looking up an old wooden pedestal at a large, weather-worn ceramic cat perched on top. I had just received my DNA results from Ancestry.com a couple days prior. The two things instantly blended together in my mind.

This piece was rendered with dip pen and ink and Paynes Grey watercolour.

We’re in the middle of autumnal woods and the leaves are falling. Our cat friend has been enjoying a solitary, undisturbed meander amongst the trees, savoring the sights, sounds, and smells, when a rather bold leaf has the temerity to land on and stick to the middle of his face. Such undignified effrontery! He is clearly quite consternated. A rather bemused little bird looks on from a safe distance in the branches above.

Rendered in black ballpoint pen & coloured pencil on toned paper. The leaf is the only thing in the drawing that’s in colour.

Deep inside a deserted old English park very late at night, a solitary cat makes her way along a narrow, winding path. The walkway meanders through dark shadows, past bright lamplight, overgrown, untrimmed hedges and lofty drooping trees. She is on patrol of her realm. She’s looking for anything suspicious, unfamiliar or out of place. Every shadow, movement and sound holds a new mystery. She sees and hears things we never could.

Fang, the snaggletoothed tuxedo cat, is at home with a couple loyal, yet untrustworthy friends (or fiends?). The full moon shines through the gothic window.
This particular full moon, however, is a giant grinning pumpkin! It's all quite eerie, yet in a sinisterly gleeful way, suitable for year-round viewing. Drawn in black India ink with predominantly blue & orange watercolor washes.

Since a child, l've loved to draw cats with one protruding tooth, I love tuxedo cats, I love to carve pumpkins, and I love curly-cue lines. And my favourite colour is orange. So there you have it.

He meanders past tilted, crumbling, ivy-covered cat statues as overhead eccentric, swirling trees fill the sky. Birds flit about the dense undergrowth.

She thinks she sees shadowy shapes dart across the lawn and slither through the shrubbery. The poor cat is trapped indoors. All she wants is to leap through that window into a moonlit landscape of wild curiosity filled with unknown and unseen excitements - and perhaps an exploit or two of good old mischief.

'production'.) What might transpire tonight in this hidden, lonely corner of the old park?
Are they waiting for another, as yet unseen participant to join them? You might think it unfair, but I'm leaving it up to your imagination to create the scenario and whatever story may follow. My drawings are collaborations between myself and the viewer. It takes your mind to complete them.

What we have here is an extremely posh, well-attired Grackle-About-Town sauntering nonchalantly along top a stone wall, past a much surprised, amazed and bewildered black alley cat. The cat doesn’t have the foggiest notion what to make of this situation. The hand-lettered text below sums up the cat's predicament. Laying claim to their favourite park bench, a determined crow and a quite sizable, consternated black cat face down each other in the midst of an exceptionally mysterious park.

Who’s going to budge first or will the impasse continue till one of them regretfully relinquishes their post?

The fantastical grounds are filled with eccentric statuary and urns, towering hedges and peculiar topiaries. An Art Nouveau - fashioned tree takes center stage.

How will the confrontation resolve itself? That is up to you to decide.

Here we have our curious and somewhat trepidatious cat friend from "The Forgotten Gardens" and "The Watchful Hedges" continuing her journey through the increasingly dark and unnerving twists and turns of this immense derelict garden. She has somehow felt ‘watched' all along, but this time it's even more apparent that she is indeed being observed.

I've always loved old ironwork, weathered gates, gardens left to I’m their own devices, strange topiary...and all things eccentric.
And of course cats. Moody and atmospheric settings are hugely engrossing to draw - much more so than bright sunny days when everything's so very unmysterious (ho hum). This was based on a vague, fleeting image that darted through my mind whilst drowsily listening to Erik Satie's ‘Gnossiennes’.

On a quiet, secluded English lane a solitary cat emerges from the gate of an old estate, out into the moody twilight landscape for his evening sojourns. To my mind it takes place in November or early winter with its hushed quality and melancholy tone. The lamplight is just coming on, and along with the setting sun is casting sinuous shadows across the lane and up upon the old stone walls. I enjoyed playing with the serpentine shadow patterns cast by the trees, branches and iron fencing.

This drawing is an homage of sorts to the great 19th century Yorkshire painter of twilight, John Atkinson Grimshaw, whom I encourage you to investigate.

In the hushed quiet of a winter’s night, under the light of a large crescent moon, a lone tuxedo cat silently makes its way down a steep snow-covered hillside, leaving a trail of paw prints in the pure white snow. It travels past a stand of old twisted pine trees with drooping branches.

The top third of the narrow vertical is dominated by the moon shining on snow-dusted pines whilst the bottom two thirds is comprised of pure white snow, the pines and the descending cat. The image is one of strong contrasts and exudes a sense of quiet and stillness.

In a clearing, a noble white cat sits mesmerized by the open volume at her feet. Is it a favourite book revisited or something new? She reads by the generous light of the crescent moon which has kindly lowered itself from the night sky to provide illumination. The scene is framed by swaying grasses in the foreground and a mysterious white column.

Behind her is a curtain of flowing, dark swirling leaves forming constellations of churning galaxies a la Van Gogh. Below the leaves, in the background, a shadowy figure lurks.

Is all this actually happening or is it the dreamlike imaginings of the cat as she reads her book?

“His Master’s Voice”

Originally painted in 1898 by English artist Francis Barraud, the painting showed his late brother’s dog ‘Nipper’ looking into the horn of a wind-up Edison-Bell cylinder phonograph and listening to a recording of his late master's voice.

Nipper then evolved into the mascot for the Gramophone Company in 1899, as he stared into a disc gramophone.

He later morphed into the trademark for HMV (His Master’s Voice) and RCA Victor records.

Nipper is now retired to a pleasant life in the garden but does get a bit confused by watering cans.

This drawing was made 30 years ago, before I became obsessed with cats. It features Hugo, a black lab I frequently drew back in those days. Hugo was very friendly and curious, and often found himself in unusual circumstances.

Here we have an extremely alert protagonist guarding the front gate of an old cottage. The wooden gate is covered by a thick hedge of overgrown ivy, lit from above by an overhead lantern. A warm, inviting light beckons from within the cottage windows. It appears that Hugo is surprised to see this particular visitor. Is it you?

It’s nighttime in an atmospheric hidden alcove of an old park and a black cat is slinking across the top of an ornate park bench. Through the surrounding dense foliage lamplight shines upon the cat, casting the cat’s shadow along an ivy covered wall behind the bench.

I actually witnessed this scene on one of my many moonlit nighttime sojourns. The cat didn’t like my staring and quickly ran away. It is rendered in black ballpoint pen.

It’s spring going into summer and our orange tabby friend is inhaling the scent of overhanging blooms. He’s shniffing the fragrance in deeply to the tip of his tail!

He’s standing on a stone wall with front legs perched on the edge of a red folding chair next to a round table with a tea service and a vase of flowers set upon it. The setting is a small, cosy backyard with the kitchen window swung wide open in the background.

This drawing is a sequel to “The Forgotten Gardens” where we have a very curious cat who has wandered into an abandoned, seemingly derelict old English garden - a garden that appears to be haunted and more than a little spooky. As the cat carefully tiptoes through overgrown weeds and grasses it can't shake the feeling of being constantly watched - but by whom…..or what? The looming topiary in the foreground, shaped like a giant cat, seems particularly interested, but that can't be...right?
