Maybe it is a thing that changes with the countries? But first time I saw Y up was in modeling, after some years into it, because of Maya and Unity (always worked with max and unreal)

in my 5y of industrial engineering before modeling, I've always seen Z axis up. And the rule of the thumb was always made with the right hand (I hated it) also to know which direction was positive, or even how the screws work internatinally by convention too. Maya, U3D and ZBrush always F'd my mind

Why, tho? Z makes more sense. XY is always the canon for 2D graphs, so that is taken as ground and then by rule of thumb, Z point up. That's it.

For those new here, follow me on my art journey on AAA games, and for our indie game side project, Pangea Luckily, I can now say that the 2nd and 3rd there were Call of Duty Warzone Mobile and Call of Duty Black Ops 6. They credited studio on the first, and individually -finally- us on the second
