#Arnhem82: today in 1944 Operation Market Garden began. The Air Armada took elements of three Airborne divisions deep into enemy territory and filled the skies as men dropped between Eindhoven & Arnhem, as seen in these private photos of the time.

Actually, in the Dutch article it’s fuck-up as well. We’re well into massive Anglicisation here. But the right translation would be: ‘Enorme blunder’.

#DDay82: When I visited Normandy for the first time in 1979 with my Dad we met Major John Howard DSO outside the Gondrée Café. By this time 81 years ago he and his men had taken the key bridges and the code words Ham & Jam signalling their capture filled the radio network.

Today is Estonia’s Flag Day 🇪🇪🇪🇪🇪🇪 Our blue-black-white flag tells the story of a nation that chose freedom and refused to give it up. Today, we celebrate that story — and the freedom it represents.

Not so much the beaches but the fortifications yes. And especially the effect of carpet bombing on them.

Yes very well defended. Almost ’perfect’ Atlantikwall with defence in depth. Omaha did have its geography as natural barrier.

Yeah I might do a comparison some day with some random other beaches in France or Holland. Let’s see how heavily defended Omaha Beach was.

On the southside of Uncle Beach (also Stp Helgoland) was a type 623 casemate for MG facing east with an AA-position on top with 3.7 cm Flak. That could definitely be used as a dual purpose gun.

It's a 7,5 cm FK 237 (i). Captured Italian fieldgun 75/27 M 06. 16 of them were added to the inventory of the German LXXXIX Armeekorps on 13 March 1944 and designated 'bodenständige Waffen', which means they were added as static weapons to specific bunkers.
