Stanley references W.E.B. Du Bois's Black Reconstruction throughout.. Seminal .. ideologically to everything we're dealing with and what its morphed into. blackbooksdotpub.wordpress.com/wp-content/u...
W.E.B. Du Bois's 1935 masterwork, Black Reconstruction, is a decisive refutation of the then official history of the Reconstruction era. As Du Bois shows, whites in the South, with the collusion of Northern elites, brought an end to the Reconstruction era because of the widespread fear among the wealthy classes that newly enfranchised black citizens would join with poor whites in developing a powerful labor movement to challenge the interests of capital. Du Bois shows how the Reconstruction era was a time of just governance, when black legislators not only did not govern from their own self-interest but bent over backward to accommodate the fears of their white fellow citizens. At the time, Black Reconstruction was largely ignored by white historians; but by the 196os, the history Du Bois there recounts became widely recognized as fact.

Academic historians knowingly promulgated a false history of Reconstruction for political reasons. They used their discipline not to pursue truth, but rather to address the psychic wounds of white Americans arising from the Civil War. By providing a comforting vision of history that covered over the stark moral differences between states, historians justified the removal of the minimal protections of citizenship for black citizens in former pro-slavery states. The final chapter of Black Reconstruction is titled "The Propaganda of History." In it, Du Bois harshly denounces the practice of appealing to the ideals of historical scholarship, truth and objectivity, to advance political goals. To do so, Du Bois declares, is to undermine the discipline of history. Historians who advance a false narrative for political gain under the treasured ideals of truth and objectivity, according to Du Bois, are guilty of transforming history into propaganda.

Unclear what SK's reasons are for not crediting and disagreeing w Gebru or Torres's analysis [TESCREAL] but surmising from virulent anti black racism above~could it be "eugenics"/"racial inequity"/neo confed racial capitalism? 🤔 ~Tho Shanley is allegedly anti-capitalist/* "groyper-anti globalist"
Analysis

According to critics of these philosophies, TESCREAL describes overlapping movements endorsed by prominent people in the tech industry to provide intellectual backing to pursue and prioritize projects including artificial general intelligence (AGI), life extension, and space colonization. (1146) Science fiction author Charles Stross, using the example of space colonization, argued that the ideologies allow billionaires to pursue massive personal projects driven by a right-wing interpretation of science fiction by arguing that not to pursue
such projects poses an existential risk to society.?! Gebru and Torres write that, using the threat of extinction, TESCREALists can justify
"attempts to build unscoped systems which are inherently unsafe" !11 Media scholar Ethan Zuckerman argues that by only considering goals that are valuable to the TESCREAL movement, futuristic projects with more immediate drawbacks, such as racial inequity. algorithmic bias, and environmental degradation, can be justified.TESCREAL is a neologism proposed by computer scientist Timnit Gebru and philosopher Émile P. Torres. An acronym, it stands for Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, (modern) Cosmism, Rationalism (denoting the ideology of the rationalist community, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism."!I?! Gebru and Torres argue that these ideologies should be treated as an "interconnected and overlapping" group with shared origins."! They claim these constitute a movement that allows its proponents to use the threat of human extinction to justify expensive or detrimental projects and consider it pervasive in social and academic circles in Silicon Valley centered on artificial intelligence. 3! As such, the acronym is sometimes used to criticize a perceived belief system associated with Big Tech.

Origin
Gebru and Torres proposed the term "TESCREAL" in 2023, first using it in a draft of a paper titled "The TESCREAL bundle: Eugenics and the promise of utopia through artificial general intelligence"!1|41 First Monday published the paper in April 2024, though Torres and Gebru popularized the term elsewhere 3! before the paper's publication. According to Gebru and Torres, transhumanism, extropianism, singularitarianism, (modern) cosmism, rationalism, effective altruism, and longtermism are a "bundle" of "interconnected and overlapping ideologies" that emerged from 20th-century eugenics, with shared progenitors."! They use the term "TESCREAList" to refer to people who in their judgment subscribe to, or appear to endorse, any or all of the ideologies captured in the acronym.!!The "TESCREAL" authors do have names, after all. You would want to specifically credit them, right?

More wild ~Shanley is attempting to discredit a Black tech scholar/Timnit Gebru's work on eugenic Al/ TESCREAL-while using dated groyper memes (from her "former" yrs to target Gil). Auernheimer became something of an avuncular figure to Kane, according to his account of their relationship. "At this point, I had a bit of a reputation in the tech world," he explains. Auernheimer's as accomplished a troll in real life-and as much of a racist-as he is on the internet, as his anecdotes sometimes demonstrate. "I was feeling especially misanthropic because I was banned from the Internet by order of a federal court, so I felt it was a good application of my time to spend my nights insulting people that didn't deserve such a privilege. At one point that night, I put a piece of paper and a pencil in front of a black man that claimed he was an expert in scaling web infrastructure and asked him to demonstrate the use of the toupper) function in the C programming language, a challenge equivalent to asking a mathematician to multiply two whole numbers.

Kane is one of the most high-profile feminist activists in San Francisco. She publishes long pseudoacademic essays on her website, Model View Culture, which have been characterised by critics as "man-hating diatribes" and she uses a profanity-laced Twitter account to attack prominent figures in the tech industry, such as Netscape founder Marc Andreessen, journalists, start-up employees and even other women. Yet Auernheimer says Kane switched to feminism and social justice merely as an excuse to bully people, and that until very recently she was an outspoken racist.

more context ..on the inception of MVC, etc all of this is in the archived blog. archive.ph/pM7Gg#select...
One year ago, in January 2014, I hit the enter key and launched Model View Culture, a new publication and media platform focused on technology, culture, and diversity. Later that month, I stood onstage in front of 200 people at our launch party with my business partner, Shanley
Kane.

Four months later I resigned. I put up a post on my blog titled "Leaving Model View Culture" that quietly stated that I had resigned due to irreconcilable differences with my business partner without going into much detail about why. I took the summer off to work on a few personal projects, and returned to working as a designer.

Now 1 am ready to share more of the story.

I left Model View Culture because working with Shanley felt like I was in an abusive relationship.

I first met Shanley at an event I was hosting for Double Union, a feminist hackerspace in San Francisco that I co-founded. Our conversation was brief - she thanked me for putting on the event, I mentioned that I had read one of her blog posts, and thanked her for writing. A few weeks later I emailed her, asking if she'd be interested in being one of the seven speakers at the next event in the series. She said yes, and in the process of organizing that event, I told her about an idea I had.I first met Shanley at an event I was hosting for Double Union, a feminist hackerspace in San Francisco that I co-founded. A few weeks later I emailed her, asking if she'd be interested in being one of the seven speakers at the next event in the series. She said yes, and in the process of organizing that event, I told her about an idea I had.

I had quit my job a few weeks before, and I was thinking of not going back to work for someone else - instead, I wanted to found a new feminist tech media company. One with a longer form publication, themed issues, a print quarterly, an event series and a conference. I had the code
for the website and the collaborative process for working with many authors at once already developed from my four previous years of publishing the Open Review Quarterly literary journal.

I had figured out a draft budget - I thought that this could support two people as a lifestyle business, I told her excitedly. Shanley was also interested in publishing and media, and around Halloween, we met again for drinks and talked out the details. A few days later she also quit her
job, and a few weeks later we were in the process of incorporating, coding, and recruiting our first round of authors.

In retrospect, founding a company with someone I had only known for a few weeks was a bad idea, but at the time I was thrilled to have found someone who shared common interests and was willing to take the risk with me.

Tho Shanley was co-fnder~it was Greenhall who initiated MVC. After revelations of racism up to MVC's fnding AG noted "Had I known abt these things before we were well into running the company, doubt would have chosen her as a co-founder." Later SK credited herself as Founder~then "erased" Greenhall.
We launched after two months of hard work: the publication had a good reception, sales of the print quarterly exceeded our goals, and I loved working with all the authors and event speakers.

But as the business grew, my relationship with Shanley deteriorated. Each day I dreaded having to interact with her. I had trouble squaring that dread with how much I loved the work I was doing
and the company's vision, and for several months I tried everything to make it work. But eventually I was able to see many of the things I was experiencing - such as yelling, excuses that the yelling was just because she needed me so much, her demands that I isolate myself from my friends - as classic abuser tactics. I woke up one morning with the bone-deep realization that I could no longer work with her.

Shanley has since erased me from Model View Culture's history. Fighting erasure of work is a feminist issue, and also one that Shanley is aware of and has specifically addressed in the past. Yet the publication did not announce that I had left, and quietly took me off the about page, though it has continued to refer to itself as "we." Shanley credits herself as "Founder" not "co-founder." In telling the story of founding the company in press, she does not mention that I was there unless specifically asked about it.Shanley presenting herself as "Founder" on the Model View Culture about page and on Twitter, paired with a tweet from a storify about fighting erasure.

Recently, some of the things that Shanley told me in confidence after we founded the company have come to be generally known: that she'd had a months long, live-in relationship with the sadistic harasser and internet troll "weev" and that she had had a racist past. These issues have been written about extensively, following a pretty awful article where weev discloses their relationship and her racist past in an effort to hurt her and the diversity in tech cause in general.

What concerned me about these revelations was not that Shanley has had a relationship with weev where she participated in making racist jokes, but that she did that so recently before starting a publication focused on diversity. Had I known about these things before we were well into running the company, doubt would have chosen her as a co-founder. As it was, at the end of our 6+ months of working together, I came away unsure if she had actually fundamentally changed from that past or not.

"... the text thread between some Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers includes a competition over who can pull over the most black drivers. There are also numerous uses of the 'n-word' related to use of force and discharging firearms at black residents."
According to sources who spoke to WBTV on the condition of anonymity, the text thread between some Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers includes a competition over who can pull over the most black drivers. There are also numerous uses of the "n-word" related to use of force and discharging firearms at black residents.

Multiple sources say the text messages were discovered while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was investigating Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Seth Elliott for misuse of the Flock network. Elliott is facing a criminal charge after court records show he allegedly used Flock Safety and other technology to help someone involved in a drug investigation, documents revealed.

During that investigation, text messages and other data were downloaded from Elliott's phone and turned over to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. A further review of those messages showed Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers in a text thread making derogatory statements about black people.

I have questions.............
so trying to respond but at a loss bc I have LEOs within my fam (paternal side) who entered the force to make changes from within-due to to klan infested sheriff's dpts targeting their communities in the JC South.... but feel absolutely powerless whistleblowing bc of FOP and smaller unions like IUPA.

there are LEOs who don't want to do this.. many end up retiring or leaving 'service. is there any way to change the union structure / criminal justice system.. so it ultimately works more like the nordic model or similar (as civil servants) vs collaborating with an authoritarian militia force?

Bolsonaro defended this,,,, "In 2014, a National Truth Commission identified 377 state agents, close to 200 of them still alive, as responsible for hundreds of cases of torture, killings, and enforced disappearances."
This kicked off the bloodiest period of the dictatorship (1964-
1985) and spurred a stronger response by leftist groups that were engaged in ongoing armed resistance.

In 2014, a National Truth Commission identified 377 state agents, close to 200 of them still alive, as responsible for hundreds of cases of torture, killings, and enforced disappearances.

Last week, forensic experts identified the remains of trade unionist Aluísio Palhano Pedreira Ferreira, whom authorities kidnapped and disappeared in 1971, the Commission concluded. He is one of only five people identified from the more than 1,000 bags of human remains unearthed from a clandestine grave almost
30 years ago.The anniversary of Institutional Act 5 has gained new significance this year, after Brazilians elected former army captain Jair Bolsonaro as president. As congressman, Bolsonaro opposed the creation of the Truth Commission. Paraphrasing the motto inscribed on Brazil's flag, Bolsonaro has defined the bloody military period as "20 years of order and progress." He also calls the late Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, who directed one of the dictatorship's torture centers, a "hero."

Prosecutors charged Ustra and a civil police officer with kidnapping Palhano, but the courts rejected the case, citing an amnesty law passed by the military regime that has so far shielded all torturers from justice. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights has ruled twice that the amnesty law should not prevent the prosecution of grave human rights violations.

The U.S. State Department supported the coup through Operation Brother Sam and thereafter supported the regime through its embassy in Brasília. 615|9 The military regime, particularly after the Institutional Act No. 5 of 1968, practiced extensive censorship and committed human rights abuses. 0] Those abuses included institutionalized torture, extrajudicial killings, and forced disappearances.'][12] Despite initial pledges to the contrary, the regime enacted a new, restrictive Constitution in 1967, and stifled freedom of speech and political opposition. Its guidelines were nationalism, economic development, and anti-communism.

This explains everything. Fash right "Missor Movahed Ghaleh Nouri" ...French Iranian incel and his peers who forces his staff "to wear identical tan suspenders, billowy shirts," with "unkempt facial hair"...while loathing BLM, and worshiping Napoleon, Nietzsche, + eugenic freak Jordan Peterson.
In a now-deleted mission statement, Mohaved appears to allude to the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests as one of the reasons he started his foundry.

"I was shocked to see ignorant people tearing down statues," he wrote. "These fools who weren't even in the same league as those they were trying to destroy. These ungrateful people who had never done anything in their lives."Atelier Missor, active since 2021, describes itself on X as a "classical foundry in Paris, on its way to building a new Rome." Its founder, Missor Movahed Ghaleh Nouri, has claimed he was drawn to pursue classical sculpture after receiving a vision of Napoleon I while wandering the Place Vendôme in Paris. His staff wear identical tan suspenders, billowy shirts, and unkempt facial hair, and-per previous versions of their website-spent much of the first half of the 202os producing bronze and clay busts of such figures as (of course) Napoleon, Nietzsche, and Jordan Peterson.

"Deportations across the country start in Williston, VT. The ICE data center and National Tipline there take calls from San Diego, CA to Bangor, ME, leading to detentions and deportations nationwide. Williston is also home to the National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center..."
What, When, Where, and Why Vermont?

From October 4-9, a coalition of groups and individuals under the umbrella
"Shut Down ICE VT" will converge to shut down the ICE national surveillance headquarters. You are invited to come and document.
Deportations across the country start in Williston, VT. The ICE data center and National Tipline there take calls from San Diego, CA to Bangor, ME, leading to detentions and deportations nationwide. Williston is also home to the National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center, which starts the process of targeting people through social media and other means for ICE actions and raids. Read about it HERE.

Vermonters have already stopped ICE from using the Burlington International Airport for over a year, and they've shut down ICE surveillance repeatedly at the Williston, VT facility. Next up: a week of mass actions to stop ICE's work at their national nerve center through civil disobedience, noise demos, festivals, teach-ins, and more.

That's the what, when, and where; as to the why Vermont, we think this struggle is winnable and a win will have national implications. The targets are not ICE activity, but rather ICE data centers from which they power their surveillance and targeting. Because northwestern VT leans progressive with deep activist and organizational cultures, this makes itInformation on ICE Data Centers in Vermont

ICE National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center (NCATC)
White Cap Business Park, 426 Industrial Avenue, Williston, VT
This facility surveils the public to identify targets for ICE arrests. Analysts here also surveil family members, friends, or co-workers of potential targets.

• This facility then sends out "targeting orders" to all 25 ERO field offices across the country. Therefore, many of the ICE actions we see in the news are directed from this facility.

• ICE plans to add 12 workers here, who will expand ICE's ability to surveil social media, including searching for "negative sentiment" toward ICE.

• This facility reportedly uses a software called Graphite, which can hack into a user's cell phone without the target ever knowing.

• This operation began in June 2006 under the name "Fugitive Operations Support Center." It is reported to have begun operation at 70 Kimball Avenue before moving to its current site at White Cap Business Park in 2010.

ーー

ICE Law Enforcement Support Center (LESC)
188 Harvest Lane, Williston, VT

This facility houses ICE's National Tip Line.

• This facility not only responds to tips, but it also performs "proactive targeting" of individuals, just like the NCATC at 426 Industrial Avenue.

• ICE's central database of information on 340,000 targets for arrest is housed here as well.

UAE/Abu Dhabi's corrupt "Beyond Borders" airline Etihad popping up again..this time in Manchester Anyway aside from this, "Boycott the UAE" bc ~well they're bankrolling AI/tech fascism/eugenic Silicon Valley VCs~from an endless supply sovereign wealth + committing genocide in Sudan (RSF) ...
This stunning exposure of the modern Manchester City's insides was precipitated in November 2018 by the German magazine Der Spiegel sensationally publishing internal City documents, leaked to it from a hack of City's emails. Most damaging in that exposé were emails and financial documents that appeared to show Sheikh Mansour's ownership group was paying the bulk of the multimillion-pound sponsorship of the club by the Abu Dhabi airline Etihad, which includes bearing the name of the stadium.

The published documents suggested that City's regime, in its determination to spend the vast money required to attain success in modern football, was circumventing the financial fair play (FFP) rules. Introduced by Uefa in 2011, then similarly by the Premier League in 2013, these rules seek to restrain overspending by clubs, particularly on soaring player wages, by limiting the financial losses that owners can fund. Money must be spent from a club's earned revenue, including TV and commercial rights, income from supporters and sponsorships - owners cannot use a sponsor as a vehicle for putting more funding in.Huge funds have been spent in all areas: expanding the stadium, building the huge academy and "campus", buying a multi-club football empire. The hierarchy recognised very early that Barcelona had been an ideal model, and the new City was constructed along those lines, even to attract Guardiola, the manager who had brought success to the Catalans, finally recruited to east Manchester in 2016. Al Mubarak understood from the incomparably huge publicity at the outset that owning a Premier League club, and making it successful and attractive, was a showcase for Abu Dhabi. Among the roster of sponsors from the beginning was the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, advertising the country to the world via the billboards around the pitch. The hierarchy also put work into embracing the importance of the club and its heritage to supporters, and its community presence, winning friends with significant investment in local facilities.

By 2017-18, the structures were mostly in place, Guardiola had won his first title, Mansour's personal investment was declared at €1.3bn, and the club moved into profit. Der Spiegel's exposé landed as an explosive challenge to the project, revealing not only alleged financial manipulations but a ruthless approach within the new City at odds with the public image.

In one of the emails, City's in-house lawyer, Simon Cliff, wrote that Mubarak was resisting a financial sanction from a previous Uefa investigation, into City's massive losses of 2012 and 2013, that ultimately led to a settlement. Cliff wrote: "He would rather spend 30 million on the 50 best lawyers in the world to sue [Uefal for the next 10 years."

annnnnd lbr "privatization" is not about stabilizing democracy to counter "communism" .. segue.. leaving this here bc the so called "pro democracy" red-baiting theme/red-brown horseshoe' tho valid in some cases.. (often exploited by a center rt pov) is a very dated/old deflection/narrative.
Thomas Zimmer @thomaszimmer.bsky.social

If there is one lesson to draw from the history of fascism in the interwar period in Europe, it is this:

Democracy falls if and when mainstream conservatives and centrist/center-right elites decide to make common cause with extremists because they consider the
"radical Left" the more acute threat.

[quoted post: one dozen rats at a keyboard @panasonicx4500.bsky.social
"The New York Times collaborated with a white nationalist eugenicist hacker and agreed to keep his identity a secret to publish a Zohran Mamdani hit piece" is a way bigger story than "18 year old Zohran Mamdani ticked 'African American' on his Columbia application because he was a citizen of Uganda"]

Thomas Zimmer @thomaszimmer.bsky.social

Historically, perhaps the most important question deciding the fate of democracy has been: Will mainstream conservatives and centrist elites hold the line against the extreme Right - or give themselves permission to accommodate and support the extremists as a way of consolidating their own power?

"Another provision requires access to advanced Al-driven facial recognition platforms that can search large image databases and open source media, ingest images in bulk, perform rapid one-to-many comparisons and integrate with existing targeting and case management systems."
The connection to Palantir is not new
The July PWS provides direct evidence that ICE wants LexisNexis data programmatically available to Palantir, but it does not identify the receiving Palantir application or say that the company's entire database will be copied into it.

The document supports live queries, batch requests and data imports. It does not disclose the transfer frequency, data schemas, retention periods or whether results will be stored permanently in Palantir.

Feeding the data into Palantir is therefore best understood as enabling programmatic access and import, not necessarily transferring all 82 billion records.

The architecture predates the current procurement. ICE's 2020 LEIDS solicitation required an interface with what it called "FALCON/Raven Palantir systems" and a system-to-system connection combining vendor records with Palantir analytical data to locate people and assets.

The wording blurred two distinct systems during a transition already underway.

FALCON was HSl's customized version of Palantir Gotham, while RAVEn was an internally developed ICE analytics platform intended to replace it and end the agency's future sole-source dependence on Gotham. The solicitation anticipated that a vendor-neutral API would eventually replace the direct Palantir connection, although Palantir continued to support ICE through its separate Investigative Case Management platform.

What has changed is the scale of ICE's current Palantir environment.

In May, ICE awarded Palantir an $86.27 million order to modernize ERO's Enforcement Case Management System on a Case Management and Analytics Platform.

In June, the agency issued a separate $45.85 million order for HSI investigative case management and analytics modernization on the same platform.

Both orders were placed under a five-year, departmentwide Palantir blanket purchase agreement with a $1 billion ordering ceiling.

Those HSI and ERO platforms are plausible destinations for LexisNexis queries and results because the data contract serves both components.

The public documents do not establish which one will receive particular data streams. They also do not prove that LexisNexis data will flow directly to ELITE, the Palantir application that can map potential enforcement targets, assemble individual dossiers and display address confidence scores.Al and facial recognition expand the requirement
The July PWS goes beyond the corresponding 2020 requirements in several important respects.

It calls for an Al-driven identification system that can combine anonymized behavioral indicators, device metadata, network signatures, commercial telemetry and passive environmental markers with known information to infer the identity of an end user.

Another provision requires access to advanced Al-driven facial recognition platforms that can search large image databases and open source media, ingest images in bulk, perform rapid one-to-many comparisons and integrate with existing targeting and case management systems.

The PWS does not identify the identity inference or facial recognition providers, specify which image collections would be searched or establish an accuracy threshold.

The sole-source notice names only LexID and Accurint Virtual Crime
Center, leaving unclear whether the Al functions are part of the proposed $6.7 million bridge, requirements for a later contract or capabilities LexisNexis would supply through another product or provider.

fwiw~ Williston, Vermont is at the epicenter of the nation's ICE Intel surveillance "targeting centers" with the prospect of 24 analysts for ERO ONE: 12 to "National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center in Williston, Vt., and 12 more to the Law Enforcement Support Center in the same town.").
Fifteen analysts would work at Potomac Center North, the Washington headquarters. Twelve would go to the National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center in Williston, Vt., and 12 more to the Law Enforcement Support Center in the same town. Nine more analysts would be assigned to the Pacific Enforcement Response Center, listed in the draft as Laguna Niguel, Calif. A project manager holding a top secret clearance would be based in Washington, separate from the 142 positions.

The Williston facilities have drawn fierce protests since October 2025, when federal contracting records showed the agency planned to hire contract workers there to expand surveillance to monitor social media to identify people for arrest and deportation. Vermont State Police arrested 13 people in July after protesters blocked the entrances, and arrested or cited 13 more in February.A draft statement of work posted to the government's contracting clearing house would place 142 contract intelligence analysts inside 24 immigration enforcement field offices and three national targeting centers.

The posting, published on SAM. gov today, covers what Immigration and Customs Enforcement calls ERO ONE, short for Enforcement and Removal Operations Overwatch and National Security Enforcement.

The draft says the unit will support the collection, analysis and reporting of intelligence used to inform ERO activities with a nexus to "national security, public safety, officer safety" and detention-related work.

ERO ONE intelligence analysts would research and analyze information from classified and unclassified sources, evaluate it for reliability, and turn it into finished intelligence for ERO officers and supervisors.

The draft lists 11 task areas. They include supporting the agency's intelligence collection requirements, identifying trends and emerging threats, producing threat assessments and intelligence summaries, building link charts and network diagrams that map relationships among individuals, organizations, locations and events, identifying gaps in what the agency knows, and briefing findings to headquarters and field leadership.national map of ERO ONE:

Where ICE Would Put 142 Contract Intelligence Analysts
A draft statement of work posted to SAM.gov assigns analysts to 24 field offices and three targeting centers.

Circles are sized by the number of positions.
Williston, Vt., combines the two centers there, and Washington combines headquarters with the local field office.

post thoughts. ~Learning "blanqueamiento," / whitening didn't just occur in Chile ..but also in Argentina and throughout Latin America with some exceptions (eg~Brazil) Despite Afro Chilean diaspora written out as an obsolete/insignificant population~it was due more to repression/erasure. ‪
Lumbanga founder Cristian Báez Lazcano describes this period as one of "blanqueamiento," or whitening, and as a time of enormous psychological violence. Chileanization imposed a particularly narrow definition of Chilean identity onto the communities living in the north, as part of an assimilationist and anti-Peruvian project. Drawing on his own family's collective memory, Báez recalls stories about abuelos hiding both Black ancestry and the cultural practices that came with it. These were acts of self-protection in response to a regional policing of Blackness that linked it to border conflict. Chileanization insisted on the public expunging of' racial difference, and on the conflation of national loyalty and investment in a singular, Chilean Whiteness.

"The same Pinochet dictatorship-era laws that have allowed such a powerful military response to the current protests have also, for many years, facilitated the harsh criminalization of Mapuche ... activists. And in these configurations of race, it's almost as if Black people in Chile do not exist."
This persona has in part justified itself through about a century of immigrant policy meant to attract Europeans and "whiten" the population. It has also, of course, relied on the cultural and geographic marginalization of indigenous groups-including the Mapuche and Aymara, the two largest groups. The same Pinochet dictatorship-era laws that have allowed such a powerful military response to the current protests have also, for many years, facilitated the harsh criminalization of Mapuche land reclamation activists. And in these configurations of race, it's almost as if Black people in Chile do not exist.

Blackness is seen as foreign, outside the possibility of Chilean citizenship or belonging. But Africans and Afro-descendants have lived on the land since Spanish colonizers first arrived several centuries ago, bringing enslaved people with them. In Arica, an area formerly claimed by Peru, Black people have long formed a significant part of the population. However, after Chile conquered the province from Peru during the War of the Pacific, the new government ignored their presence, ushering in a period of Chileanization.Lumbanga founder Cristian Báez Lazcano describes this period as one of "blanqueamiento," or whitening, and as a time of enormous psychological violence. Chileanization imposed a particularly narrow definition of Chilean identity onto the communities living in the north, as part of an assimilationist and anti-Peruvian project. These were acts of self-protection in response to a regional policing of Blackness that linked it to border conflict. Chileanization insisted on the public expunging of racial difference, and on the conflation of national loyalty and investmen in a singular, Chilean Whiteness.

But this approach is beginning to change (or, at least, it's beginning to reveal itself in explicit terms). Afro-Chilenos in the north are now fighting for recognition, Indigenous groups continue to organize against state violence, and growing numbers of Black immigrants—especially Haitians—cultivate community in the face of virulent anti-Blackness. The current political agitation has at times been led by Mapuche organizers; in one viral image from November 2019, protestors gather around a statue of a conquistador while one person stands atop, holding up the Mapuche flag against a burning sky, hazy with smoke and sun. Indeed, the uprising has wrenched open space for a reconsideration of what it means to be Chilean, and perhaps for an unfixing of Chilean nationhood itself. Because what kind of commitments does the wedding of Whiteness and
