The European nobility of the 17th & 18th centuries tried to literally wipe their African slaves out of the history books by having them painted in the shadows.

ps. The character played by Merle Oberon was an incredibly popular 19th century female French novelist and journalist who went by the pen name "George Sands". She was a passionate feminist who was famous for wearing men's clothes even without an official "permit", which was required at the time.

ps. Here's a quote on Laura Knight's coastal paintings from Sarah Reynolds: "The works depict solitary women looking out across the calm blue expanse of the ocean towards France. There are no men in them because they are all fighting and dying in the trenches. These are deeply psychological works."

ps. Anthony Quinn was creating art and architectural designs long before he became an actor. In fact, it was one of his art teachers who first recommended he take acting lessons – as a form of speech therapy after an operation.

Women at the Cornish Coast by Laura Knight. (The artist painted a number of these scenes around 1917. There are never any men in them, because all their men had gone off to war. Once you know that, it gives the initial romaticism a thought-provoking subtext.)

"Pervitin" was a form of crystal meth used by the German army during WW2. Tens of millions of tablets were taken to enhance military performance, and it's said that without them, the Blitzkrieg against Poland and France wouldn't have been possible. Hitler is also said to have been a Pervitin addict.

Flapper* covers of Life magazine from the 1920s. ... *"Flappers" was the name given to a generation of strong, emancipated young women who refused to return to their traditional roles at the end of World War One, after having previously taken over the civilian jobs of the men who were away fighting.

I'll always remember Hockney on British TV talk show about 'TV' when I was about 11. They obviously invited him on to talk about "we need more art on TV". But instead, he slagged off the fundamental essence of TV because he thought the picture was so bad. The presenters had no idea how to respond! 😄

ps. 'Samuel Coleridge Taylor' the composer isn't to be confused with 'Samuel Taylor Coleridge' the poet. The composer (who added the hyphen later) was given the middle name 'Coleridge' by his mother, who was a fan of the poet's work.

Germans and Poles were very close allies in their fight for democracy during the 19th century. So much so that the Polish flag flew alongside the new *black, red, gold* flag of the German democrats at the Hambacher Fest of 1832.
