A sketch on a self prepared board which is my trickiest surface to pastel on but gives some of the most painterly results. This is a 30x20cm sketch of mullein (verbascum) which grows wild around here. We had a couple of grey cloudy days recently too, which makes a nice change. #mullein #pastel #art
Pastel painting of a mullein wild flower in a field with trees behind in the distance and a cloudy sky. Mullein (genus Verbascum) grows with large soft textured leaves and spire like cower spike. It has lots of medicinal uses.

Last year I met Jean-Yves when we exhibited together at Echalla’rt art festival. We did a picture exchange. This year we both took part in the plein air competition at the same event and both won a category. Art friendships are a great reason to put yourself out there at expos and concours.
Me and Jean-Yves holding our exchanged paintings. And this year with our prize winning pics.

It’s the season of summer teasels, when the lilac coloured ring of flowers climb the cone of the teasel. I sketched this scene after a bike ride and decided to work it up to a larger piece, now framed in a 70 x 50cm frame. It’s a soft pastel painting on sanded board.
Sketch of teasels in the foreground against a backdrop of a track and shady undergrowth. You can see the structure of the teasel plant and the lilac floret rings on some of the teasel cones. Easel with the smaller sketch reference and larger work in progressFinished teasel artwork.Teasel artwork shown framed and displayed on a stone wall.

The Puymerle clearing exudes a special sense of tranquillity; once a resting place for pilgrims, it is home to an underground chapel. Today, the surrounding forest provides a refuge for wildlife. #landscape #art #pastel
A pastel painting of a view underneath the branches of a large oak tree. The view is a grassy clearing toward a single building in the distance. Trees surround the clearing. A few purple orchids can be seen in the foreground.

Revisited, resized and a few touches added. It’s good to go through old work, sometimes you find a little gem. I hope cyclists find this and enjoy looking at it. I’ve no idea how this algorithm works. Let’s try #cycling #art #foxglove #bumblebee

When the rain and grey skies get me down I like to paint the garden I hope to see. Alliums are already peaking their shoots through the soil. More than last year. Alliums and geums. Pastel painting 40x30cm.
Pastel painting of Alliums in a garden, back lit by the morning sun. Those still in shade are deeper shades of purple, the ones catching the sunshine are pale violets and pinks. Orange geums and green foliage provide contrast.

A quiet night ride under a full moon. 🌕 Two cyclists on an empty road, watched by an owl in the trees. This is Night Ride — an original hand-printed linocut inspired by night cycling and rural landscapes. Is this your type of ride?
