Three games are currently fighting over the Mass Effect-shaped hole in sci-fi RPG genre. Wrote about the different marketing approaches and what they reveal. Waiting for #gamescom 2026 to add milestones to this race. complexitygovernance.substack.com/p/sci-fi-rpg...

With all the not-so-sudden Bethesda news, my biggest question is #Fallout. What kind of Fallout game will Obsidian make? I assume the most people had the same immediate reaction as me - Fallout New Vegas 2. After thinking about it, I'm not so sure.

Fallout 5 is officially in pre-poduction. I really hope @bethesdastudios.com has the time and resources to make a truly systemic RPG. One and a half decades between releases should buy more than prettier graphics and a larger world.

At last -- a word form the @bethesdastudios.com No groundbreaking reveals or announcements. A carefully crafted message communicating presence, diraction and control. Beyond the expected Fallout 3 and Fallout NV remasters, the most important point for me is the commitment to Creation Engine 3.

The dystopian world is here. For some reason, I received the "temporary label to your account which may impact its reach" on X. Support proved even less helpful than Grok. And Grok suggested - seriosly - to adjust my posting to demostrate "normal human pace" and "good behavior" to the algorithm.

One concern after a second read of Asha Sharma's letter. "Not the best home for every studio." "Higher-priority projects." "One operating model." Together, they suggest not just portfolio rationalization - but potentially fewer creative experiments.

I've been thinking that the next major event in the game industry may not be a game announcement at all. It may be EA's proposed $55B take-private acquisition. The headline number is enormous. But what really interests me isn't the valuation - it's the ownership model.

State of Unreal 2026 just wrapped. My main takeaway: Tim Sweeney wants to build the gaming industry's ultimate creation ecosystem. Or, more bluntly: The Ultimate Roblox. That idea anchored the entire presentation.

With @xbox.com now entering an actual crisis-management phase after a period of assessment and community trust-building under Asha Sharma, hard decisions were inevitable. That is simply the financial and operational reality of the current industry.

Newzoo’s 2026 PC & console report is useful beyond the headline market numbers. My read: the market is not simply growing or declining. It is becoming more segmented across PC, console, pricing, discovery, engagement, and long-tail durability. Long-form analysis:

Another observation: While much of the industry is retrenching toward established IP, the battle for the next generation of RPG audiences is increasingly being fought by new franchises. Exodus. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The Blood of Dawnwalker. #RPG

[1/5] A lot of info (and speculation) on @xbox.com business "reset" recently. Overall: textbook crisis management. The most interesting element is the apparent confirmation of Bethesda's _conditional_ independence. Combined with news on Starfield underperforming, it raises an important question:

The more I watch the market, the more I convinced that handhelds are now one of the industry's most important strategic battlegrounds. With mobile as more than half of global gaming revenue, dedicated handhelds occupy an attractive position between premium gaming experiences and mobile convenience.

The recent #NintendoDirect felt like a miniature macro-recap of the broader industry. Many of the same defensive patterns are visible everywhere: intense reliance on proven IP, growing use of remakes and remasters, and careful management of hardware transitions.

A lot of promising announcements at the #XBOXShowcase. As always, I'm more interested in the strategic signals than the trailers themselves. And the signal this year was a cautious, calculated approach to platform boundaries.

Two articles recently clicked with me - not just as part of my industry research, but as a 40-year-old gamer. The latest ESA data shows 67% of Americans now play games weekly, and the average player is 37 years old. We're no longer a niche. We're the center of gravity. variety.com/2026/gaming/...

Next: @ubisoft.com earnings. The report reads like the inverse of Take-Two’s story. Not growth. Controlled contraction around proven IP. Tencent capital, debt management, cost cuts, AI tooling, and live-service durability are buying time for the 2027–2029 release cycle. [1/6]

[1/9] @cdprojektred.com’s Q1 2026 earnings are not explosive — but they matter. This is not about short-term acceleration. It is about building a bridge from Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 into The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2. Key takeaways 👇

#MassEffect 5 is still years away. And competitors like The Expance: Osiris Reborn and Exodus are much closer. So how does BioWare keep the franchise alive without overusing trailers, lore teases, or premature hype? My thought experiment: Mass Effect × LEGO.

SEGA pivots away from its $800M live-service "Super Game" ambitions. Hasbro backs a $1B pipeline centered around premium AAA. Destiny 2 is entering its sunset phase with no clear successor. Fortnite growth appears to be plateauing after major structural layoffs at Epic.

Another thought from Take-Two’s market framing. When mobile is more than half of a $200B+ games market, no platform holder can ignore it. That helps explain the handheld renaissance: a bridge between premium games, portable usage, stores, subscriptions, and persistent accounts.

Take-Two FY26 earnings got me thinking about capital allocation. With $2B in cash, $1B in expected FY27 operating cash flow, and Zelnick saying T2 is “well-positioned” for M&A, there are options. Beyond infrastructure targets - tech, tools, delivery - which game studios could actually fit? (1/4)

Take-Two just dropped FY26 results, and the calm before the GTA VI storm is almost over. T2 is a clean example of the modern AAA model: live-service base, mobile scale, premium IP as cultural event, and M&A optionality. Here is what the numbers say. (1/7)

Interesting interview with another game industry veteran - James Ohlen. It is a stark look at what happens when creatives are forced to manage bureaucracy. The sad irony? BioWare ended up stripped of all that ambition anyway, retreating to a single-IP studio. www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/it...

The game industry isn't just in a contraction cycle - it’s in the midst of a major structural split. Giants like Xbox, Sony, EA, and Take-Two are optimizing around ecosystems, retention, subscriptions, live operations, and franchise lifetime value - not isolated releases. (1/5)

Fascinating piece from HushCrasher. The article is right to focus on scope. But scope is not just content volume. It is the density of dependencies between systems, teams, pipelines, platforms, and approval layers. That makes scope not a content volume issue but a complexity governance problem.

Pearl Abyss’ Q1 earnings letter is out, and it’s one of the clearest examples yet of the new AAA reality. #CrimsonDesert was a commercial success. But even a successful blockbuster launch may no longer be enough to comfortably sustain a modern AAA pipeline.

One of the most complex variables in Asha Sharma's mandate: what to do with exclusives? The market signals are completely contradictory right now. Sony is tightening the leash on PC ports, while the biggest event of the decade (GTA6) will launch cross-console.

The #Xbox shakeup is textbook "second wave" of management: a new CEO importing trusted operators. The public is fixated on their AI backgrounds, but actual CVs reveal the true denominator: growth. Scaling a stalling platform is exactly what Asha Sharma was mandated to do.

GTA6 will define the industry for years to come. But beneath Zelnick's rhetoric about being 'terrified' by expectations lies a $1.5B capital recovery problem. To absorb the cost of an 'S-Tier' mega-project, what will the retail price actually be? $80? $100?

Saw @dezinuh.bsky.social praising Rogue Trader recently, and it sent me down a massive design rabbit hole. There is a huge hunger right now for the deliberate cadence of classic isometric RPGs. But I don't think that demand is about camera angles or hex grids. It’s a structural contract.

Following EA’s financials (and the lack of an earnings call - interesting in itself), I’m very curious to see Pearl Abyss’ Q1 2026 report and call. Revenue figures should be strong. Despite #CrimsonDesert’s successful launch, Pearl Abyss’ stock continues to struggle.

Electronic Arts' FY26 earnings release is a clear look at how modern AAA publishing works. Live services dominate. Console ecosystems remain critical. AAA is built around long-tail engagement. Underneath it all: a textbook example of preparing a massive corporate structure for handover.
