Guten Morgen mit Mark Rothko (25. September 1903 – 25. Februar 1970)
Mark Rothko
No. 5 / No. 22
1950 (auf der Rückseite auf 1949 datiert)
MoMA, Floor 4, 404

Japanese umbrellas, ‘wagasa’
Radiating an incandescent golden warmth against the night, a dense composition of illuminated Japanese oil-paper umbrellas (wagasa) presents a rhythmic study in translucent color and geometric line. Backlit from within, the delicate membranes of handmade washi paper project an amber, cream, and soft vermilion glow, revealing the fine structural skeleton of split bamboo ribs (hone) radiating systematically from central wooden shafts. Stenciled across the taut, pleated canopies are crisp floral motifs—most prominently stylized cherry blossoms (sakura) in deep crimson—running along the umbrella borders and upper domes. In the lower foreground, a parasol edged with a slender lime-green band introduces a subtle chromatic counterpoint, while the background dissolves into soft, honeyed bokeh and deep shadowy voids.

Tracing their lineage back to early folding parasols imported from continental Asia during the Heian period and reaching their functional zenith during the Edo period, wagasa represent a masterclass in monozukuri (artisanal discipline). The creation of a single umbrella is an arduous, multi-stage craft requiring the synthesis of specialized trades: fashioning the flexible bamboo ribs, hand-stretching durable mulberry-fiber paper, applying natural vegetable oils (traditionally perilla or sesame) to achieve waterproofing, and sealing the wooden hub (atama) with protective lacquer (urushi). Beyond their historical utility as protection against rain and sun, wagasa maintain an enduring presence in Kabuki theater, traditional tea gatherings (nodate), and bridal processions. In contemporary culture, night illuminated displays (wagasa-akari) celebrate the unique way oiled washi transforms harsh, direct light into a soft, ambient radiance.

Japanese obi designs as presented by uchinopotemayo
This nine-panel compilation showcases the diversity and technical refinement of traditional Japanese silk embroidery (nihon-shishū) across vintage obi textiles. Ranging from dense, opulent metallic threadwork (koma-nui or gold-thread couching) to soft, unspun silk flat stitches (hira-nui), the collection highlights how master embroiderers manipulated thread tension, stitch direction, and sheen to achieve three-dimensional relief. The various silk grounds—ranging from smooth black satin (shusu) to textured crepes and muted lavenders—serve as dynamic backdrops.

The composition celebrates classic bird-and-flower (kachō-ga) iconography alongside rich seasonal symbolism. The top-left panel pairs heavy gold-embroidered chrysanthemums (kiku) and autumnal maple leaves (momiji) against a swirling stream motif (ryūsui), evoking the poetic passage of time. Nearby, the center-left panel depicts a white pheasant nestled among chrysanthemums and woven garden fencing (shigaki) on a warm taupe ground, while the center panel showcases delicate wild field daisies (nojiku) scattered across deep black silk. A vibrant mid-20th-century sensibility also emerges in the top-right and center-right panels, where saturated magenta, emerald green, and bold floral forms—such as ginger blossoms and stylized begonias—reflect the expressive color palettes of the Taishō and Shōwa eras.

The bottom row explores auspicious, courtly motifs (kichō-monyō) centered around the folding fan (ōgi) and ceremonial cordage. In the bottom-middle panel, a brilliant vermilion ground features an open fan overflowing with layered crimson, cobalt, and white chrysanthemums, anchored by intricate braided cords (kumihimo) tied in festive knots. To its left, a quiet, contemplative scene shows a songbird (mejiro) perched on a wild daisy branch against charcoal silk, while the bottom-right panel pairs a partially unrolled fan with delicate cordage and green foliage on a dust-violet ground.

With a deer as the Messenger of God at Itsukushima island, Japan
Enveloped in the misty coastal air of Itsukushima (Miyajima), this serene photograph captures a woman in formal attire standing along the shrine's shoreline, framed by the iconic vermilion O-torii gate and a roaming sika deer. The atmospheric composition juxtaposes the vivid red of a traditional paper parasol (wagasa) against the soft, cool-toned gloom of the Seto Inland Sea at low tide.

The Sacred Setting & Imagery
Behind the central figure, a granite stone lantern (tōrō) anchors the right foreground, while the massive camphor-wood pillars of the 16-meter-tall O-torii loom through the sea fog. In the shallow water behind her, a wild sika deer walks across the tidal flats. Revered in Shinto belief as divine messengers (shinroku, 神鹿) of the kami, the deer of Miyajima have lived alongside pilgrims and priests for over a millennium, embodying the sacred protection of Itsukushima Shrine.

Textile & Styling Details

Kimono: She wears a understated silk kimono in a delicate dove-gray hue, exemplifying the quiet, dignified aesthetic of shibui (unobtrusive elegance).

Obi: The muted tone of the silk is balanced by a striking, high-contrast black fukuro-obi woven with rich gold and metallic floral motifs.

Color Harmony: A vibrant red braided cord (obijime) and tucked sash (obiage) mirror the brilliant crimson of the hand-crafted wagasa, linking the human silhouette directly to the historic vermilion lacquer of the shrine architecture fading into the distance.

By surrounding the figure with sacred wildlife, fog-shrouded shrine architecture, and classic winter-wet coastal light, the photograph distills the quiet, enduring spirit of yūgen (profound grace and subtlety) that defines Japan's legendary sacred island.

A fascinating and illuminating essay about the essence of black in Japanese lacquer.
“In Japanese culture, black has often been more than just a color. It can suggest dignity, silence, depth, restraint, and mystery. Lacquer-black, in particular, is not something instantaneous. It is produced through labor, repetition, and time. Layers are applied, dried, and sometimes polished to create a surface whose beauty comes not only from its color, but from accumulated process. So the black of lacquer is not merely visual. It also carries the feeling of time and human work made visible.”
